At-A-Glance Film Reviews: Mission: Impossible (1996)
Most of the original Mission: Impossible television series episodes were brilliantly constructed "sting" operations, skillfully executed by a team of top notch agents one could only admire for their professionalism, efficiency, expertise, and sheer ingenuity that enabled them to perform seemingly impossible tasks.
The plans for a film were in the works for upwards of fifteen years, delayed again and again for various reasons, until it fell in to the hands of director Brian DePalma and producer/star Tom Cruise.
Mission: Impossible's third strike is the filmmakers' blatant irresponsibility in handling the legendary screen characters of the original series.

It’s a film with Christianity in it all right, but it’s more about what it means to be a human being, and the inevitable fall out from the clash of two very different cultures.
But the real heart of the film comes from the Indian tribe at the centre of the story, played by a genuine tribe rather than extras, who are all remarkably strong, relaxed and naturalistic.
It’s a consistently interesting film in visual terms (although Joffe is perhaps rather restrained in terms of his use of camera positioning and movement), and cinematographer Chris Menges was rewarded with an Oscar for his troubles.

The second sequel, Mission: Impossible III however, was praised for its use of teamwork in various missions; a trait very much in line with the original series.
The train sequence was filmed on the Glasgow South Western Line in Scotland (hence the landscape not appearing much like Kent) using a normal British train with the image of the TGV overlaid using CGI, indeed in a few frames the real diesel locomotive at the front of the train is visible.

The code of The Mission (Johnnie To, 1999)
The films of John Woo are often cited as some of the finest examples in the genre.
In To's film, the action style of Hong Kong cinema is shown to have reached a mature state of repose (and I'll gradually show what I mean by that) as the industry underwent a period of financial crisis from 1997 onwards.
Thus, The Mission evolves into a character-study of how gangland brothers (who are the modern variants of chivalric knights-errant) relate to each other and pay off obligations or redeem themselves when they have wronged a brother or a big boss.

 The Mission
A visually stunning epic, THE MISSION recounts the true story of two men--a man of the sword (Robert De Niro) and a man of the cloth (Jeremy Irons)--both Jesuit missionaries who defied the colonial forces of mighty Spain and Portugal to save an Indian tribe from slavery in mid-18th-century South America.
Despite their differences, the two men must unite to save the mission when Spain, Portugal, and the Catholic church begin negotiating their boundaries in the area--negotiations that will affect both the freedom of the natives and the well-being of the Jesuit missionaries who have set up safe havens for them.

At the heart of filmmaking is the visual grammar that we call film editing where each shot is like a bar of music.

 "The Mission" by Mark Pinsky
In sharp contrast to THE MISSION's young Jesuits, who were killed by Spanish and Portuguese soldiers, Serra died peacefully in his sleep in 1784 at the age of 71, surrounded by a few Indian converts at Mission San Carlos Borromeo in Carmel.
Nonetheless, the Franciscans thought their hunter-gatherer society was uncivilized, chiefly because the California natives of the time permitted abortion and divorce, were promiscuous (i.e., they remarried alter divorce), failed to discipline their children, bathed in sweat lodges and worshipped the forces of nature.
After luring the Indians into the mission settlements with everything from trinkets and musical instruments to a regular and reliable food supply, the Indian converts were compelled to build the structures and grow crops to feed themselves, the priests, colonists, soldiers and civil authorities.
