Topic: The Mod Squad (film)

The Mod Squad - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Mod Squad was a television police drama from executive producer Danny Thomas in the United States that ran from 1968-1973.
It was a police show that featured "hip" young crime fighters: one African-American, one street kid, and one blonde woman.
The Mod Squad, a 1999 film, attempted to update the show's premise, making the young detectives more "edgy".

The only problem is the film was aimed at an audience that never saw the early-1970s TV series that inspired it, and this dubious recycling resulted in paltry returns at the box office.
Before it's over, the "squad" is in it up to their necks, while also running afoul of a bunch of wrong cops who are also involved with the drugs, and consequently tied in with their investigation.
The only thing that saves this film at all is the presence of Claire Danes, and had they have simply had ninety minutes of her on screen, and dumped the appalling Giovanni Ribisi, things would have been significantly better in my view.

The whole film really is a bunch of disjointed little pieces that have been extracted from any number of sources you care to name that have been linked together in a such a way that is designed to provide the utmost confusion to the viewer.
However, it does seem that the quality of the transfer suffers the further the film goes on (or is that a result of the fact that the film was putting me to sleep?).
There was no problem with film artefacts in the transfer, with just the odd fleck of white present, which is to be expected in such a recent film.

Movie Review - Mod Squad, The - eFilmCritic   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-29)
The ones where a song from the film’s hopefully sell-able soundtrack blares in Dolby Digital while each member of the cast stares longfully (and long) to the side of the camera each on their own, instead of together like they should be.
This film is 94 minutes long and I counted at least three of these sequences.
But then, on the same title card, the film identifies what a “SQUAD” is. How dumb does it think its audience is? The film doesn’t even play up the definition of “MOD” in the screenplay other than as the title of the movie which essentially isn’t even there’s to claim to begin with.

While The Mod Squad unspools, watching Danes' strong and confident crime fighter performance, it's clear there are dozens of other worse choices she could have made.
Granted, The Mod Squad is not Danes' Boogie Nights, meaning the type of break-out film that gave Mark Wahlberg such credibility.
The Mod Squad puts Danes closer in spirit to someone like Laura Dern who built her reputation with chancy roles in films such as Wild at Heart, Blue Velvet and Citizen Ruth.

`Mod Squad' Stays True to the Original / Story of undercover cops plays like TV series
The premise for ``The Mod Squad'' was good when it aired in 1968-73 and still is. Three tough juvenile offenders are recruited as undercover cops to infiltrate youth hangouts where mean adults prey on kids.
These Mod Squaders, of course, are resented by the ``real'' cops, and Ribisi sometimes seems to be playing a parody of one (``We're undercover!'' he blurts out at one point).
At a radio station promotional screening for this film, the start of ``The Mod Squad'' was put at a disadvantage when it had to compete for attention with a guy from the audience who won a prize for brandishing his pair of dentures.

TV's The Mod Squad, which ran on ABC from 1968 to 1973, was the creation of Bud Ruskin, who as a young man had worked as an undercover narc for the L.A. Sheriff's Department.
His inspired notion was to package three "mod" Sixties youths in a format (the hourlong police drama) that even the staunchest silent majority type could handle.
The stars of the new film version (Epps as Linc, Claire Danes as Julie, and Giovanni Ribisi as Pete) have shown their talent in other films.

That fact that "The Mod Squad" opens with a dictionary definition of "mod" appearing on the screen -- altered to include Generation Y hipsters -- did not bode well for the intelligence level to which this movie was aiming.
When their police department mentor (Dennis Farina) is framed and murdered, the mod squad, which has never been viewed favorably by the rest of the cops in the precinct, sets out to solve the crime on their own, amidst a backdrop of wah-wah guitar action sequence music and the requisite cop movie running gags.
Danes has already established herself as one of the better actresses of her generation in varied roles in films like "Little Women," "Home for the Holidays," "U-Turn" and "The Rainmaker." Not the least of the film's offenses is the way the trio of punks rehabilitated into an undercover police unit are surrealistically saddled with '70s speak in a '90s world, or the way they cruise the streets of LA in classic, gas-guzzling boats while everyone else drives a Japanese compact.
Still worse is the characters' postured malaise, the inane dialogue, and a muddled plot that has something to do with dirty cops, a cache of drugs, and a frame-up.
Miss Danes's future is not as a sex symbol, and The Mod Squad is way too "freaky" of a mess to be mod.
