The Modern Lovers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Led by Jonathan Richman, the protopunk band The Modern Lovers came out of Massachusetts in the early 1970s.
For the first album, The Modern Lovers, the band included Richman, bassist Ernie Brooks, keyboardist Jerry Harrison, and drummer David Robinson.
Almost three years after the first album's release, the album Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers, featuring a completely new lineup, was released.

Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers
But Richman's real claim to fame is as the leader of Boston's Modern Lovers, whose single Velvet Underground-influenced studio album arguably set off the entire New Wave movement in the United States.
Richman's solo work is hit and miss, with a string of "Modern Lovers" albums that rarely deserve the title.
A regional New England success in the early 70s, the Modern Lovers recorded a few demos and live tapes before heading to California to start work with John Cale on an album for Warners Brothers.

The Modern Lovers were the band that was able to most successfully draw and build upon the spirit and sound of the Velvet Underground, taking this influence in a direction that was different and just as original and ground-breaking in its own right.
The Modern Lovers listened deeply to the Velvets and picked up on the subtleties and complexities they expressed, by recognizing and developing their core elements of honesty, beauty and transcendence they provided a greater honor to the legacy of the Velvet Underground than all other bands claiming their influence.
What all of these early Modern Lovers songs have in common is that they document the unaffected vision of an individual dealing with the universal theme of loneliness.

Jonathan Richman disapproved of the "official" 1976 Modern Lovers debut album on Beserkley and, despite writing liner notes when this collection of early demos was first released in 1981 has rarely performed any of these tracks since the early '70s.
The nine tracks on this re-release of the Kim Fowley-produced Modern Lovers sessions from 1972 or 1973 (nobody can quite remember which) claim to be remastered, but they still sound raw and primitive, which actually works to the music's advantage, presaging the punky DIY ethos that would explode a few years later.
Later, in 1973, the Modern Lovers recoreded an album with John Cale that was finally released by Beserkley in 1976.

Jared's Pick - Album Reviews: The Modern Lovers
One of the first shots fired in the punk revolution, The Modern Lovers' debut is a bright chunk of bracing, stripped down rock and roll.
Inspired by The Velvet Underground, Richman and the Lovers took that band's primal drive and minimalist guitar, leaving out the seedy drug references and psychosexual experimentation.
Punk is about speaking your mind simply and directly - the Lover's pure joy in simple rock and roll inspired countless bands to do the same, and their seductive sound has held up remarkably well.

Compiled of demos the band recorded with John Cale in 1973, The Modern Lovers is one of the great proto-punk albums of all-time, capturing an angst-ridden adolescent geekiness that is married to a stripped-down, minimalistic rock & roll derived from the art punk of the Velvet Underground.
While the sound is in debt to the primal three-chord pounding of early Velvet Underground, the attitude of Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers is a million miles away from Lou Reed's jaded urban nightmares.
As he says in the classic two-chord anthem "Roadrunner," Richman is in love with the modern world and rock & roll.

Anyway, the Modern Lovers got "discovered" by record producer Kim Wheeler who took them out to the Left Coast where they recorded a bundle of songs.
But there were also references that you didn't have to be a New Englander to relate to, such as modern moonlight, being in love with the modern world, and, most crucially, driving with the radio on, with the radio on, with the radio on.
All in all, The Modern Lovers deserves a spot in the collection of anybody interested in the development of Modern Rock in America.

And make no mistake, The Modern Lovers’ early songs were affronts to the hip pieties of their time.
In fact, the Modern Lovers were the subject of a bidding war among the major labels: “Roadrunner” was obviously a huge hit waiting to happen.
It captures every great moment they recorded in the studio (Rounder’s Precise Modern Lovers Order adds some sloppy but exciting live material, including several songs that remain unavailable otherwise) and makes the best argument possible for their status as one of the greatest American bands.

This 12-song, 1976 album, actually a collection of demos from earlier in the decade, opens with the ultimate Boston driving anthem, "Roadrunner." In addition to its fun, straightforward guitar-and-keyboard songs, such as the anti-drug "She Cracked," the loopy "Pablo Picasso" and the rocking-secretary "Government Center," the album is notable for historical reasons.
David Robinson was the Lovers' drummer before he joined the Cars, Jerry Harrison was keyboardist before he joined Talking Heads, and ex-Velvet Underground violist John Cale produced half the tracks.
The Modern Lovers is a historically important album in the evolution of rock n' roll.

The idea of what the first Modern Lovers album would sound like with John Felice playing on it is interesting; the idea of what it would have sounded like with Gram Parsons playing on it is beyond intriguing, a musical tease of parallel dimension proportion.
The Modern Lovers intimated in the first record that they were picking up where the Velvet Underground left off.

Not only was his unique approach enormously influential on later bands, original members of the Modern Lovers went on to become successful in such groups as Talking Heads (Jerry Harrison) and the Cars (David Robinson).
Although released shortly after The Modern Lovers, Jonathan Richman & the Modern Lovers was recorded five years later with a totally different band, and has little in common with the first LP.
He stretches way back to include a couple of Modern Lovers classics: “Girlfriend” and “Pablo Picasso,” a song which he famously refused to perform for years but which has recently made its way back onto his set list.

In the shadows of the night in Caldwell, New York, there's a deadly turf war going on between vampires and their slayers.
Perhaps the most famous of Lawrence's novels, the 1928 Lady Chatterley's Lover is no longer distinguished for the once-shockingly explicit treatment of its subject matter--the adulterous affair between a sexually unfulfilled upper-class married woman and the game keeper who works for the estate owned by her wheelchaired husband.
Now that we're used to reading about sex, and seeing it in the movies, it's apparent that the novel is memorable for better reasons: namely, that Lawrence was a masterful and lyrical writer, whose story takes u....

Richman is capable of converting a clubful of strangers into rapt devotees, but instead he's become an oddball cult hero preaching to the already converted.
Modern Lovers 88 – a joyful if abbreviated set from Richman and the current Lovers, drummer Johnny Avila and guitarist Brennan Totten – will do nothing to alter this.
If Richman were capable of irony, the album's title might seem tongue in cheek: the simple chord changes, bare-bones instrumentation and unsophisticated production are as un-up-to-date as any of Richman's works since 1976's hard-edged Modern Lovers.

There are two albums (CDs) that I will regularly play for friends that they've never heard - Modern Lovers and Marquee Moon - both screaming out of the speakers with verve and passion and innocence and aching.
That Jonathan Richman lost his muse after writing the various tracks that make up this compilation, issued for the first time four years after most of the songs were recorded, does not diminish their magic.
