Luna Kafé - The Moodists: Two Fisted Art (1980-1986)
Also in the band was Mick Turner (currently Dirty Three and Tren Brothers) and The Moodists' sound engineer Victor Van Vugt (now residing in New York) whose credits include Beth Orton, PJ Harvey and Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds.
The second disc captures The Moodists live in all their blistering menace.
Although largely ignored in Australia during their existence, The Moodists' influence can't be denied; this here punter can hear their attack echoed in the moody urgency and lurching bass of nineties band Crow and current Sydneysiders, the confronting Bluebottle Kiss.

Originally from Australia, the Moodists are graduates of the thump'n'grind school of gothic punk.
The Moodists' reign of terror continues on the six-song EP.
There's also a spooky version of "The Streets of Laredo." With a new combo that reunites the Moodists' rhythm section, the music is supple and textured, providing a perfect vehicle for Graney's increasingly accomplished writing and singing.

Fact was, the Moodists seemed to make more headlines for being the Darlings of the British Rock Press - just like their contemporaries, the self-obssessed Birthday Party - and that was enough to piss off someone who was living (in his mind's eye) in a musical suburb of Detroit.
I had the Moodists pegged as the Birthday Party's little bruvvas, when a good listen would have shown them to be related, but also on their own trip.
It shows the Moodists to be as dark and intense as the rest of the Seaview Ballroom set - but blessed with a wry sense of humour.

By early 1987 the Moodists had totally burned out and Miller was tour managing full time.
The wearying and thankless life of a tour manager was not the life he had hoped for though, so in August 1988 he returned to Australia and found a flat in Melbourne.

I never really knew what to make of the Moodists when they were around in the ï80s, mainly I guess because I had no clue and believed what the music press wrote.
So when the music press said that The Moodists were in the same vein as fellow AustralianÍs The Birthday Party, I went along with it.
So whilst I would certainly not have bought The Moodists records when I was a kid, these days IÍd heartily recommend them to anyone with a modicum of soul and a passion for the ïrightÍ kind of Rock sound.

No, Ed Kuepper, the Lighthouse Keepers, the Moodists and X are re-living the "golden age" of Australian music, reports Bernard Zuel.
He's the promoter and the man behind the double CD of the same name - a CD that pulled together 40 singles from what Pittman considers the golden age of Australian music: 1976-1989.
However, Kuepper is nearly a household name for longevity and productivity, even among those who have never discovered his genius, and the Moodists' Dave Graney briefly ruled as the king of pop and irony in the '90s.

Although they released two more singles, The Moodists went through a number of line-up changes before finally disbanding in 1987.
