"Moon" tells the story of a town that is invaded and subdued by an army from another country--little hints indicate that the invader is WW2-era Germany.
Today, "The Moon is Down" is less well-known that some of Steinbeck's other works, but it bears comparison with his best.
I found "The Moon is Down" much more effective than some of Steinbeck's other short novels which are frequently forced upon young readers.

Drawing Down the Moon is an ancient Pagan ritual enacted at the Esbats to draw the powers of the Full Moon, EHandler: no quick summary.
Drawing Down the Moon is potentially one of the most powerful magickal acts Witches perform.
One of the earliest known references for Drawing Down the Moon comes from the Greek writer Aristophanes (423 B.C.E.) who speaks of witches that can “draw down the moon.” The Roman poet Horace (30 B.C.E.) writes of witches that use a “book of incantations” through which the moon may be “called down” from the sky.

For example, if the Moon is at position 1 in the diagram, the half of it that is lit by the sun is facing away from us, so we do not see the moon at all.
The important point is that the moon doesn't change, nor does the amount of the Moon which is lit by the Sun.
This occurs when the Sun lights the side of the Moon which faces the Earth (i.e., when the half of the Moon that is lit IS the side of the Moon which faces the Earth).

However, the reason the Moon stays in orbit is precisely because of gravity -- a universal force that attracts objects.

The Moon's gravitational attraction is stronger on the side of the Earth nearest to the Moon and weaker on the opposite side.
Actually, the Moon appears to wobble a bit (due to its slightly non-circular orbit) so that a few degrees of the far side can be seen from time to time, but the majority of the far side (left) was completely unknown until the Soviet spacecraft Luna 3 photographed it in 1959.
There were three principal theories: co-accretion which asserted that the Moon and the Earth formed at the same time from the Solar Nebula; fission which asserted that the Moon split off of the Earth; and capture which held that the Moon formed elsewhere and was subsequently captured by the Earth.

To many, the powerful rite of Drawing Down the Moon belongs exclusively to a Wiccan ritual and it is also rebuffed as some shoddy rite inserted with a favour to reflect the practices of Thessalian witches who 'called down the moon'.
The context of the 'drawing of the moon' in the ancient past and today is different, yet, I should say Drawing down the Moon is one of the most inspiring and evocative ritual, and it is a universal rite.
It all boils down to the intent of the practitioner.

Steinbeck didnt take the easy way out by making them merely the face of absolute evil, he showed how down deep, beneath the hate and ignorance that had been pushed upon them, they were just like all of us.
Steinbeck delves into this idea, possibly the most important and timeless idea in the history of humanity, in extraordinary description and thought, helping make The Moon Is Down one of the most moving and important works of the twentieth century.
At 188 pages, (hardbound), "The Moon Is Down" reads very quickly, it possesses a timeless quality, being first published in 1942, just prior to Americans entrance in World War II.
