The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress is a 1966 science fiction novel by Robert A. Heinlein about a lunar penal colony's revolt against rule from Earth.
The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress is similar to Stranger in a Strange Land (1961) in that both describe social upheavals, and both contain a strong streak of irony.
In The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress, the irony is that although the lunar colony is, at the beginning of the story, theoretically a kind of prison ruled by a tyrannical Warden, in reality the Warden seldom interferes in lunar society, which is portrayed as a kind of libertarian utopia.

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert A Heinlein - an infinity plus review
It is perfectly possible to read The Moon is a Harsh Mistress as Libertarian utopia: much of the book is taken up first with descriptions of the individualistic family-based social anarchy of Heinlein's lunar community, and then (when the Revolution is underway) with lengthy discussions between characters as to how 'government' ought to manage itself.
The Moon is a Harsh Mistress is a thought-experiment as well as an adventure-narrative, a fictional space in which political issues are interrogated.
The Moon is a Harsh Mistress works much better as a primer of how a small nation of farmers can militarily defeat a large nation of technocrats than it does as a book about Libertarian ideology.

Written at the peak of Robert A. Heinlein's creative powers in the mid-sixties, "The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress" ranks with "Stranger in a Strange Land" as his most popular and acclaimed novel.
Also, because of their adaptation to the Moon's lower gravity, they cannot safely return to live on Earth, so their exile is a permanent one.
The story presents a logical and somewhat predictable pathway for "the liberation of the moon" yet I was in suspense as to the success or failure of the venture until the final pages.

TMiaHM was written in the mid-1960's, pretty close to the historical high water-mark for socialist economics.

"The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" contains libertarian, or anarchist, philosophy, but one purpose of science fiction is to present challenging ideas.

TMIAHM is possibly Heinlein’s best book; it at least ranks up there with Stranger in a Strange Land, Starship Troopers, and Time Enough for Love.
Perhaps the main reason for this is that it is not just an adventure novel: the political and social scene that he sets is very much integral to the plot, and provides a great alternate look at how such things could be done, instead of what the American scene is now.

I came into my reading of Robert Heinlein's novel, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, with rather high expectations.
Heinlein has done a masterful job of showing us how a revolution such as he describes might actually take place, and on this level I think the book is thoroughly believable and works very well.
His technical descriptions of life on the moon and the AI known as Mike show that Heinlein knows his stuff as far as science and, to a certain extent, sociology are concerned.

But Heinlein does not predict that racial harmony will be universally true in the future; the reader doesn't realize how thoroughly integrated the moon is until Manny, on a diplomatic mission to the United States, is arrested for miscegenation after he innocently shows a picture of his extended family to his Southern hosts.
Some insight into Heinlein's character is gained by recalling that the novel was published in 1966, during a time of significant turmoil over race relations and the future of race relations in the United States.
