Happy Haircut: Stephen Walsh and Tara Generalovich co-star.
The sprawling story involves the fits-and-starts relationship between insecure, lovestruck grape grower Tony and the pretty young waitress from San Francisco named Rosabella who agrees to marry him based only on his letters and a photograph that turns out to be of someone younger and more handsome.
Though all of this might make Happy Fella seem light and frivolous, there is plenty of realism and edgy twists and turns, with characterizations that are far from fl-and-white.

Jolly Stewart, director of the Washington University Opera, said The Most Happy Fella is one of the most vocally challenging Broadway musicals and points out that the role of Tony usually requires an operatically trained baritone.
Compounding the difficulty for most Broadway-style companies is the wide-ranging score, which includes close to 30 numbers and is liberally sprinkled with arias, recitatives, duets, canons, choral numbers, dances, instrumental interludes and folk hymns.

And because it was a simpler time, and because there's "happy" in the title, everything gets put back together by the rousing finale.
Gilfry is in splendid voice, especially in the haunting "Joey, Joey, Joey" and "Don't Cry." Barzee is sweetly touching in her opening "Somebody, Somewhere" and "Happy to Make Your Acquaintance," when she first sees Tony as the man she fell in love with through the mail.
If it was a simpler time, it was also a less politically correct time, with Loesser doing exhaustive research on "Italian dialect" for lyrical accuracy, racial stereotyping, happy paisanos (earlier braceros) in the vineyards, and sexism and ageism rampant.

Loesser could have walked straight out of Guys and Dolls, one of his most popular shows: he loved slang, smoked too much, favored dark suits and purple ties, and was what polite people might call "excitable." His famous thirst for words was quenched by a favorite hobby: reading dictionaries-especially slang dictionaries.
In 1956, The Most Happy Fella opened on Broadway; its magnificent score revealed the true breadth and depth of Loesser's talents.

The real surprise, then, is that Rosabella responds to the revelation of Tony's deception not by proclaiming her love for her letter-writing Cyrano, but by despairing that she has been duped into promising herself to a man she finds physically repulsive.
The score of The Most Happy Fella veers, at times, toward opera, and the story does as well.
Rodney Gilfry is Joe, the hunk whose photograph reaches Rosabella, and when he opens his mouth to sing, he sets loose a warm operatic baritone which surely would have wooed Rosabella had Tony somehow misappropriated his voice, rather than his image.
