The book is based on the real-life sailing experiences of Captain Harvey C. Almstedt, who skippered the Edward B. Greene of the Cleveland Cliffs fleet.

The Mother Tongue (book) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Mother Tongue (ISBN 0380715430) is a book by Bill Bryson which wittily compiles the history and origins of the English language and its various quirks.
Mother Tongue contains a number of statements that can be considered factual errors; however, many of these are intended as jokes, and those unfamiliar with Bryson's heavily ironic humour may fail to spot this.

She answered back and said that the book was pretty much sold out (out of print) and that she was not going to reprint it because she had lost her "collator person" who was her Grandmother.
I sensed that the loss of Katherine's grandmother was connected to her unwillingness to reprint the book somehow.
The SIX (6) sock designs in the Tongue River Farm Collection vary in the number of stitches, style of cuff, charted color changes for the stranded knitting patterns and the style of toe decreasing.

This book was the expression of the literary principles of the Pliade as a whole, but although Ronsard was the chosen leader, its redaction was entrusted to du Bellay.
To obtain a clear view of the reforms aimed at by the Pliade, the Defence should be further considered in connection with Ronsards Abrg dart potique and his preface to the Franciade.
The book was a spirited defence of poetry and of the possibilities of the French language; it was also a declaration of war on those writers who held less heroic views.

Much of the book appears to have been thrown together from older books on language for the popular reader, especially those of Otto Jespersen, Mario Pei, and Montagu, which themselves have been criticised for errors and oversimplications.
While the birth and growth of the English language is a fascinating subject, it's a shame that it is spoiled in MOTHER TONGUE by an abundance of errors.
The book is basically a loose collection of anecdotes and fun-facts the language, with some about other languages thrown in for the purpose of contrast.

This book is a quick read -- entertaining and light -- but no one should trust the facts that are tossed around in it.
However, after I returned to the book lately, with a great deal more linguistic knowledge than I possessed before, though I am not by any means an expert, I found myself astonished by what I was reading.
This is a book in desperate need for an editor with a sharp eye for facts, because although some parts of the book are correct, far too much of it is just misinformation.

One branch of educational media which ought to concern itself with the promotion of the Scots language is heritage interpretation, especially in areas where it is integral to the object or site being interpreted.
Before books and modern methods of recording stories, these oral traditions were key to the survival and evolution of cultures.
Naturally many changes have taken place since this book was first published (1957) in the practice of interpretation, as in everything else, but it is still true to say that the basic principles laid down by Tilden apply today.

My rating is based on the book's entertainment value, which is only impaired by the uncertainty as to when one can rely on what is said and when not.
