The Mummy (1959 film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Mummy is a 1959 British Hammer Horror film starring Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing.
Often assumed to be a remake of the 1932 film The Mummy, which starred Boris Karloff, the film actually derives its plot and characters entirely from two later, 1940s, Universal Studios b-movies: The Mummy's Hand and The Mummy's Tomb.

It's a movie that has its moments, which helps to make sure that this movie is an above average one and because of that an also perfectly watchable one.
Basically this is the main plot line of this movie is the mummy and Mehemet Bey taking revenge on those who opened the grave of the mummy's 4000 year old lover Princess Ananka.
The character of Isobel Banning is completely underused in the movie and they could had used her character to make the movie more interesting and provide it with some more depth, with her relation between John Banning and the mummy.

The Mummy's Shroud's problems are several, and not the least of them is the fact that it fulfills what seems to be the mummy's curse demanding that all mummy movies be more or less exactly like all other mummy movies.
The plot is a rehash of the tried and true and terribly over-used mummy movie plot involving an expedition that disturbs a mummy's tomb only to have some mad Arab resurrect the mummy and send it out to kill those who desecrated the temple.
In the 1959 film, there was at least an attempt to give the Arab class and sophistication and intelligence, not to mention a compelling argument against the desecration of tombs by foreign archaeologists who were frequently condescending to "the natives," treating their tombs as classrooms in ways they would never treat the tombs of whites.

THE CINEMA LASER DVD REVIEW-- THE MUMMY
The plot of THE MUMMY centers on the aftermath of an ill-fated expedition to find the tomb of Princess Anaka, who was High Priestess to the Egyptian god Karnak.
While there are certain similarities to Universal mummy movies that preceded it, Hammer’s version of THE MUMMY is an original and truly superior horror movie.
It is the film’s strange "love story" that causes the mummy of Kharis to turn against his master, when he encounters the reincarnation of Anaka (Yvonne Furneaux) in the Banning household.

This was never completely fair; Karl Freund's original 1932 "The Mummy" (Boris Karloff's only turn in the gauze-wrapped role) is one of the most suspenseful and atmospheric horror movies of the period, and the Hammer Films 1959 remake starring Christopher Lee is also luridly effective.
Mummy-fanciers (if there are any of you), be warned: Stephen Sommers' "The Mummy" borrows almost nothing from the great, neglected, dude-looks-like-a-burn-victim tradition except its title and a cheesola opening sequence that represents ancient Egypt as an enormous Vegas hotel, complete with showgirls in fishnet jumpsuits and gold lamé body paint.
Actually, the opening scenes of "The Mummy" are far more enjoyable than the rest of the movie, what with the Hefneresque display of ancient Theban babeage, a bunch of rebellious priests being mummified alive and "Egyptian" dialogue subtitled in a lovely serif font.

Anankha’s mummy is there, along with her vast fortune in grave-goods, including a hitherto-considered-legendary text called the Scroll of Life, the latter preserved in a cartouche-shaped box inlaid with lapis lazuli.
Mehmed Akhim instructs the mummy to seek out and destroy those who have desecrated Princess Anankha’s grave, and the next thing we know, the moldy old hulk is smashing his way into Stephen Banning’s hospital cell to strangle him.

"The Mummy" got a big-budget, low-talent remake in the late 90s, which shares a few things with this movie, but the Hammer Horror version is probably the most memorable and well-made.
Also, its climactic ending is more dramatic: somehow, although the ending of The Mummy had potential as written, it didn't seem to close the story out as effectively as it might have done.
But Hammer's 1959 version, starring the incomparable team of Peter Cushing (as the hero) and Christopher Lee (as the monster), might be the best treatment of the ancient Egyptian living dead on film, as well as Hammer's best film.
