 Review: The Mummy(1999)
The film has a certain charm that I was suprised to find; it truly doesn't take itself seriously and that certainly works to get past the screenplay, which isn't that poor compared to other recent action films, but it certainly isn't art.
The film goes on and on, heading at a lightning pace towards it's inevitable conclusion and as much as I admired the technical skill and the performances that brought this movie to the screen, there was just a point where you say to yourself, "Wait...
On "The Mummy"'s DVD, five scenes of the film are broken up into the various sections of the effects, from the basic concepts, to the added effects that are built in to reach the final look of an effects scene.

The Mummy, with Boris Karloff in the title role, premiered in 1932; the film would spawn four sequels.
His tongue is cut out, he's wrapped as a mummy, placed in a sarcophagus with flesh-eating scarabs, which is then locked with a six-pointed key, and buried alive.
The film's 2.35:1 theatrical aspect ratio is presented in an anamorphic transfer from a high-definition master, and the picture is excellent.

At-A-Glance Film Reviews: The Mummy (1999)
This 1999 version of The Mummy approaches its campy adventure and goofiness with such energy and enthusiasm, it's an utter joy for those with a youthful heart.
It derives its spirit from the same source: those pulp adventure dime novels of yesteryear, where the grim-faced, lightly bearded hero was always wrestling some terrible beastie on the front cover.
The Mummy, with its sweeping desert vistas, crowded streets with vendors and wooden carts, labyrinthine passageways with secrets and treasures, is a wonderful example.

As I mentioned, I enjoyed the film when I saw it in theaters, but I went into that experience with pretty low expectation; it was one of those movies I saw mainly because I felt like seeing something, and I hadn't expected it to be terribly enthralling.
The film itself is presented in its original aspect ratio of 2.35:1 and it runs straight through on this 16X9 enhanced dual-layered disc.
Most of the film is cast in a golden yellow tone - what with all the sand and Egyptian trappings - and the DVD reproduces these colors beautifully and vibrantly.

A tearful character scene toward the end is very moving -- quite an accomplishment in an otherwise implausible story -- and Brendan Fraser again hits all the right notes in his portrayal of the rugged adventure hero, even when he's not given the proper material.

The first time I saw The Mummy was in a theater, which is, of course, the proper place for this kind of epic action flick.
Its purpose is to thrill and chill, and that it does, using a combination of humor, old-fashioned derring-do, and very modern CG effect to tell a story that is a delightful hybrid of old and new Hollywood sensibilities.
The Mummy is focused on being a summer popcorn flick, not on being a classic, and it suceeds.

The Mummy has been cursed because, back when he was alive 3,000 years before, he fell in love with the wrong woman.

The villain was frightening (I would personally like a jaw that opened up that far to release locusts), powerful, interesting-looking, and truly despisable where Boris Karloff's original was not (although, Imhotep's motives weren't that evil, and it was all for love, I wonder why we didn't like him more).

In this hyped-up re-hash, we are transported to the city of Thebes, circa 1290 B.C., where a high priest, Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo, late of the DARKMAN sequels) is buried alive for committing an act of treachery.
Another problem, frankly, was that the Mummy, like the movie that bears Imhotep's name--wasn't scary.
