The Muppet Movie is the first of a series of live-action musical feature films starring Jim Henson's Muppets.
This film was produced by Henson Associates and ITC Entertainment, and originally released in movie theatres in 1979.
The movie was dedicated to Edgar Bergen, who made his final film appearance in this movie.

Mutant Reviewers from Hell do "The Muppet Movie"
The Muppet Movie is basically the back story of where the Muppets come from, how they all meet and the adventures (or misadventures) they embark on during their cross country trek to take Hollywood by storm.
The Muppet Movie is the ultimate road trip of a frog (Kermit), a bear (Fozzy), a something-or-the-other (Gonzo), and a lot of other goofy velvet creations.
Still, this movie manages to create the Muppet mythos by giving most of the characters good introductions (such as Fozzy's humble beginnings as a stand-up comedian or Harry's job at a used car lot) and integrating them well into a team.

I don’t think that TMM is quite up to the fairly sophisticated standards of Disney flicks like The Emperor’s New Groove or the Toy Story features, but it still offers enough adult-oriented material to ensure that those of us over the age of 10 will have a good time.
The movie lacks great depth or humor, but it was largely witty and compelling, as the gentle irreverence of the Muppets remains a solid source of entertainment.
Muppeteers Jim Henson and Frank Oz are along as well, and they operate Kermit (Henson) and Fozzie and Miss Piggy (Oz) in scenes together.

THE CINEMA LASER DVD REVIEW-- THE MUPPET MOVIE
There is something universally appealing about the Muppet because, although seemingly wholesome and intended for kids, there is a level of sophistication to the characters and a wry sense of humor.
THE MUPPET MOVIE ($20) is the first of the many films, which brought the creations of the late, great Jim Henson and company to the silver screen.
Part road movie, part chase film and all fun, THE MUPPET MOVIE remains as fresh and funny as it was when it was released in 1979.

The Muppet Movie Sing-Along was at the same theater, but it was a more low-rent, grassroots affair, done as a fundraiser for the Spiral Q Puppet Theater -- a local lefty nonprofit that does political consciousness-raising by organizing giant puppet parades.
He knows the Muppet Movie backwards and forwards, but he's never seen it in a theater before -- he's only sixteen years old, so the first Muppet movie he saw in the theater was The Muppet Christmas Carol when he was four.
The movie is a victory lap for the Muppets; it's structured as a celebration of the fact that the world of 1979 is already in love with the Muppets.

The person whose Muppet work I have been a fan of, however, is Kirk Thatcher – and the company has finally wised up and handed the directorial reigns to someone who understands what the franchise is supposed to be.
Overall, though, I can only hope that this movie provides a wake-up call to the Henson Company that there is a light at the end of the particularly bleak tunnel of the last 10 years, especially under the helm of Thatcher (who I dearly hope returns in whatever the Muppets next outing is).

Trivia: This is the first Muppet movie where Eric Jacobson does Frank Oz's roles of Fozzie, Piggy and Animal.
However, as a family movie, it is simply pathetic and certainly not something that Jim Henson (or even Frank Oz, noticeably absent from this production) would've ever signed his name to.
Fortunately this movie is not representative of the quality Muppet movies produced over the years, of which we are big fans.

Apart from Kermit, the lead Muppet is Pepe the Prawn, an unremarkable character from the short-lived "Muppets Tonight" series that aired in the mid-1990s.

The Muppets were one of the unique phenomena of the late 1970s/early 1980s.
But, for the success that the whole Muppet phenomenon later found, it is a surprise that it took such difficulty to get the series off the ground.
The subsequent Muppet films under Jim Henson were The Great Muppet Caper (1981), which is as good as this, and the so-so The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984).

It was also at about this time that the young Henson coined the phrase Muppet to describe his unique combination of marionette and puppetry.
But the Muppets true lasting impact was sealed by the creation of the legendary pre-school learning programme, Sesame Street, which they have featured in since 1969.
Despite their popularity in the series, and Henson's firm belief in his creation's potential, the concept of a wider audience based show of their own was rejected by the network officials, who deemed the Muppets appeal as being limited strictly to children.
