In the heart of the village stands Astley Green Colliery Museum which, but for the foresight of Lancashire County Council and several leading figures within the community, would have suffered the same fate as the other collieries in the area, total demolition.
Apart from the steam winding engine and headgear the museum houses many exhibits, not least of which is the collection of 28 colliery locomotives, the largest collection of its type in the United Kingdom.
The museum is now run and maintained, on behalf of the community, by the Red Rose Steam Society Limited, a registered charity based in Lancashire.

Disaster struck in 1990 when we were informed that Morrisons Supermarkets plc had bought the site for redevelopment and the museum was to be demolished.
The engines are a cross-section of the main source of power that was used in the North West cotton mills, and the display is one of the largest collections of steam engines anywhere in the country.
The Museum is unfortunately not yet regularly open to the general public but visitors are welcome by prior arrangement, mainly on our working days, Wednesdays and Sundays.

As Finds Liaison Officer (based at the Museum of Lancashire, Preston, and Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery, Carlisle) Dot identifies and records archaeological artefacts (anything from Palaeolithic to Post-Medieval) discovered by members of the public.
