The Navy Lark is a satirical radio sit-com based on board a British warship named HMS Troutbridge, transmitted on the BBC Light Programme and subsequently BBC Radio 2.
The TV Lark was intended to be a replacement for The Navy Lark starting with what would have been the series' fifth season.

Lark departed Boston 3 July 1919 to join the North Sea Minesweeping Detachment at Kirkwall, Orkney, Scotland.
With the conclusion of the final sweep, 19 September, Lark returned to Rirkwall for a brief rest after the exacting assignment, made more dangerous by the strong winds, rough seas, and poor visibility of the North Sea.
On 13 October Lark sailed from Melanesia and joined a convoy headed for San Pedro Bay, Philippine Islands Dropping anchor on Leyte Gulf on the 25th, she remained off Leyte until 9 November rendering assistance to naval vessels and merchantmen damaged during the fighting and the typhoon winds which followed.

The Navy Lark was radio's longest running sitcom, sailing the airwaves for nearly twenty years before coming into harbour with a Jubilee Special in 1977.
During his time in the Navy, Pertwee joined the cast of the naval radio show HMS Waterlogged after his senior officer had sent him to check the show for inappropriate jokes.
Between series four and five of The Navy Lark appeared a spin-off, The TV Lark, which featured Number One, Fatso et al in a different setting.

He then worked as an actor and assistant stage manager with the Manchester Repertory Company, but was soon spotted by Sir Peter Hall who gave him a West End role.
His first radio appearance was in 1956; he went on to play a variety of minor characters in The Navy Lark, a navy based sit-com on the BBC Light Programme (still available on tape and frequently rerun on BBC 7).
On television, he wrote and performed many satirical skits in The Frost Report, notably a series of trios which he performed with Ronnie Corbett and John Cleese.

However the number ones job of keeping an eye on the CPO's dealings was made easier when he was assigned a slightly dumb assistant who was played by the young Ronnie Barker (now famous for his roles in comedy's such as porridge).
The Navy Lark was the second longest running comedy show in the UK and was able to grip the nation for the best part of twenty years.
The key to this shows popularity though, was its irreverent but essentially gentle humour and, most of all, the talent of its stars (who could all do more than one voice).

The Navy Lark was (I think still is) the longest running radio comedy, running from 1959-1977.
The BBC has been pretty good at releasing recordings of the various shows - there are 15 double tape packs available at present (all listed below - with links to Amazon.co.uk if you feel like buying them!) - many of the recordings are also available on CD.
They are not in chronological order - though some of the sets do keep running storylines in order where possible.
