  Nazz Biography
They were convinced that the Nazz could be marketed as a sharp, stylish boy-band for the teenybopper audience, and helped the quartet refashion themselves in that mode.
Their debut album, Nazz, appeared in October, supported by the single "Hello It's Me." reaching #71 on the national charts, the single was then flipped to a self-production of "Open My Eyes".
Although the project's scale was diminished, the music remained dizzyingly diverse, as the record ran the gamut from psychedelic rockers to pop ballads.

Formed in Philadelphia, USA in 1967, the psych-pop Nazz were not really Todd Rundgren's first band, both he and Van Osten had earlier played with Woody's Truck Stop, who were basically a white blues band and released their own album on Smash in early 1969.
Rundgren's departure for a solo career in 1970 brought the Nazz to an end, and Nazz III, compiled from material from the Nazz Nazz sessions, was issued posthumously...

  The Nazz
The Nazz was an early psychedelic garage rock band from the 1960s.
The band was formed in 1967 by Todd Rundgren (lead guitar) and Carson Van Osten[?] (bass guitar), borrowing the name from an old song by the Yardbirds.
With Stewkey in charge, Rundgren's vocals in the old tapes were replaced by his own; the band released the unsuccessful Nazz 3[?] in 1970.

Nazz is the 1968 (see 1968 in music) debut album by American psychedelic rockers The Nazz.
While The Nazz never became mainstream rock starts, they did achieve a measure of cult popularity among some listeners, especially future glam rockers and power pop bands like David Bowie and Big Star, in whom The Nazz's hard psychedelic influences can be heard.
Nazz peaked at #118 on Billboard's Pop Albums chart, while single "Hello It's Me" peaked at #66 on the Pop Singles chart.

Nazz is a crafty and infectious combination of high energy rockers, and ballads with beautifully blended vocal harmonies.
Nazz is neither "classic" nor "revolutionary," but it is a captivating venture from an Anglo mod band who faded into the rock ocean with hardly a splash.
Though it doesn't have as much overall variety as their next two albums (the cleverly titled "Nazz Nazz" and "Nazz III", the latter of which probably had a working title of "Nazz Nazz Nazz"), their debut album is still great.

Nazz, featuring original lead singer, Stewkey is not only capable of recreating searing letter-perfect 4-part harmony driven versions of Nazz classics, but the band actually has the collective creative smarts to bring the Nazz experience up to yet some other level.
Unlike their modern descendants, The Nazz shimmered with a crystalline Anglo-pop-fizz courtesy the influence of The Kinks, The Who and The Move, songs written from within, and crisp, cutting vocals from keyboardist Robert "Stewkey" Antoni.
Live Nazz." Stewkey promises rabid, rapid-fire takes on songs written by him, Rundgren and Company and -- in anticipation of a live CD and further recording -- that his Nazz will play songs even the old unit dared not play live.

The managers also were convinced that the Nazz could be marketed as a sharp, stylish boy-band for the teenybopper audience, and helped the quartet refashion themselves in that mode.
Their debut album, Nazz, appeared in October, supported by the single "Hello It's Me." Although the song would later become a major hit for Rundgren as a solo artist, the dirgey original version barely scraped the national charts, largely due to mismanagement.
The managers wanted the Nazz to only play large halls, which was virtually impossible for an unknown, unproven band with a newly released debut album.

That's not to say that the band knows exactly where they're going, since it often seems like they don't; they just like to try a lot of different styles, cross-breeding their favorite bands in a blatant act of fanboy worship.
At their best, the results of this approach are flat-out stunning, as on the lead cut "Open My Eyes," which twists the Who 's "I Can't Explain" around until it winds up in Roy Wood territory.

In many ways, that makes Nazz Nazz a better listen than its predecessor, even if it doesn`t have a knockout punch like "Open My Eyes." That`s because Rundgren`s songs exhibit a stronger sense of identity, as ballads like "Letters Don`t Count" and snarky pop-rockers like "Hang on Paul" point the way toward his solo career.
There are a few embarassing detours, such as the hippie-dippy "Meridian Leeward," but the second Nazz record rivals the first because it offers a progression.

Inspired by a variety of British Invasion groups, from the omnipresent Beatles to the cult favorites The Move, Todd Rundgren and his Woody's Truck Stop colleague Carson Van Osten formed The Nazz in 1967.
Taking their name from an obscure Yardbirds song, The Nazz were arguably the first Anglophiles in rock history.
One of their first singles, "Open My Eyes," twisted the riff from the Who's "I Can't Explain," and much of their music felt like homages to Brit-rock from The Kinks to Cream, thereby setting a precedent that was followed by scores of North American guitar-pop bands from The Raspberries to Sloan.
