Atheism as conscious rejection of theism=== The most common dictionary definition and understanding of atheism is that atheism is the conscious, purposeful rejection of theism.
Implicit atheism is defined by Smith as "the absence of theistic belief without a conscious rejection of it." Explicit atheism is defined as "the absence of theistic belief due to a conscious rejection of it".
Merging "atheism as lack of belief" into "weak atheism" would also be a horrific idea; "weak atheism" and "strong atheism" are terms that have barely been popular for a decade, whereas "atheism as lack of belief" has been a definition for over 5,000 years.

Ebon Musings: The Necessity of Atheism
If atheism is correct, this is to be expected - if religions spring from human creativity and imagination rather than a common wellspring of revelation, it is hardly surprising that people from a diverse variety of different cultures, times and places have created many different ones.
Atheism has no hierarchy of authority or immutable scripture that forces its followers to live a certain way; the essence of atheism is the free choice of the individual.
Atheism, by contrast, offers release from these superstitious and unfounded fears, and in their place offers a credo of hope: there are no supernatural powers arrayed against us, nor must we live in constant fear of judgment.

archive | the limits of atheism
The Negative Atheism of mere ignorance, of insensibility, of lust, and gluttony, and drunkenness, of egotism or vanity, whose talk is outrage, and whose spirit is blasphemy; this is the gross negation of God, which superstition begets in its slavery, and nutures by its terrors.
Utterly different from this is the Atheism of reflection, which seeks for conclusive evidence, which listens reverentially for the voice of God, which weighs carefully the teachings of a thoughtful Theism; but refuses to recognises the officious, incoherent babblement of intolerant or presumptuous men.
Negative Atheism guilty of this neglect may be said to be guilty of manslaughter, and it would be murder were the neglect accompanied, as in the case of Theism, by intolerance.

The Necessity of Atheism, and Other Essays by Percy Bysshe Shelley : Booksamillion.com (0879757744, Hardcover)
The Necessity of Atheism and Other Essays features five anti-religious tracts by Shelley: "On Christianity", "The Necessity of Atheism" (which resulted in the youthful Shelley's expulsion from Oxford in 1811), "On Life", "On a Future State", and "A Refutation of Deism".
Like his great poems, these extol the spirit of man and argue that Christianity, with its repressive creed, is wholly out of keeping with human ideals and aspirations.
As Shelley observes in his dialogue "A Refutation of Deism", there can be no middle ground between accepting revealed religion and disbelieving in the existence of a deity - another way of stating the necessity of atheism.

He was the notorious apostle of Atheism, an affront to god and man. His nefarious reputation sprouted early with The Necessity of Atheism and Queen Mab.
The first, a pamphlet, was published in 1811 when Shelley was a freshman at Oxford University, from which he and Hogg, his collaborator, were expelled for "contumacious conduct" when they declined to recant their wicked views.
We therefore embodied our doubts on the subject & arranged them methodically in the form of "The Necessity of Atheism," thinking thereby to obtain a satisfactory answer from men who had made Divinity the study of their lives.
