I was reminded many times of the writings of Jackson McCrae (thinks his "Bark of the Dogwood" or his "Children's Corner" with their colorful descriptions et al.), but NEON BIBLE has something else and this is probably due to the author's suicide and the legacy or lack thereof, that he left.
"Neon Bible" was written by Kennedy when he was almost a kid so the passages do not have the craft of Fitzgerald and Hemingway but that does not reduce it literary value.
NEON BIBLE is slower than DUNCES and while you'll recognize Toole's humor and wit, there's an element of the slapstick missing.

I don't care much for The Neon Bible, a hackneyed mood piece set in a rural backwater of the deep south, but I think the movie, which seems 100 percent Davies, is wonderful.
The Neon Bible may not qualify as a masterpiece, as Distant Voices, Still Lives and The Long Day Closes do, but it still contains moments and achievements that are as impressive as anything Davies has ever done--and to have done this with alien material makes his achievement even more remarkable.

In his newest, ``The Neon Bible,'' which opens today at the Castro, Davies extends the same themes and cinematic style that he developed in such earlier works as ``Distant Voices, Still Lives'' and ``The Long Day Closes,'' delivering a film that's gorgeous, deliberately slow and tinged with a beautiful sadness.

An American cousin to his Distant Voices, Still Lives, Terence Davies' The Neon Bible is an autobiographical memory film that ponders the childhood mysteries of growing up in a troubled family.
Set in rural Georgia during the Thirties and Forties, this film (interpreted from John Kennedy Toole's novel) is like a fragmented dream, depicting the life of a callow young boy named David who must cope with a father tortured by failure, an emotionally fragile mother, and a future without much hope.
And while fundamentalist Christian references in The Neon Bible are many, religion is an ultimately superfluous theme in the film, shaping neither character nor narrative.
