The Netherlands did not make a major impact in either of the World Wars
In World War II, the Netherlands industry and cities were greatly damaged by the Germans, along with the thousands of people who were killed in the Holocaust.
The Netherlands were not occupied at any point in the war, however, the Allied Forces put them under strict quotas.

WHKMLA : History of the Netherlands, 1940-1945
At the outbreak of World War II, the Dutch government declared neutrality.
Once the Netherlands was occupied, the German Administration pursued the policy of trying to win Dutch politicians over; 5-time cabinet president Hendricus Colijn was perceived and initially called upon the Dutchmen to recognize German control of Europe as a fact (in a brochure; a few weeks later he would revoke this call).
Being under German occupation meant that the Netherlands was cut off from imports from overseas; the lack of petrol and fertilizer, the requisition of cars and trucks by the German authorities meant that most Dutch had to use bicycles, public transportation or go on foot.

World War I, which was said to be "the war to end all wars," had definitely fallen short of this proclamation.
From 1941 to September of 1945, when all hostilities officially ceased, World War II turned out to be one of the most devastating and costly Global Military conflicts in the history of the world.
World War II was different from any other previous war, as it relied on the total commitment of all of the nations populous and economic resources.

Following the initial Allied landings on the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944, and the breakout from the bridgehead which saw the Canadians engaged in bitter fighting at Caen and Falaise, the First Canadian Army was assigned the task of clearing the coastal areas and opening the channel ports for vital supplies.
The Canadian Army's role in these final days of the war was to open up the supply route to the north through Arnhem, and then to clear the northeastern Netherlands, the coastal belt of Germany eastward to the Elbe River, and western Holland.
In the Western Netherlands the 1st Canadian Corps, comprising the 1st Canadian Infantry Division, and the 5th Canadian Armoured Division, under the command of Lieutenant-General Charles Foulkes, was responsible for the liberation of the area north of the Maas River.

Following the theme of the White House Millennium Council "Honor the Past - Imagine the Future" our goal is to assemble an oral history of the American and Dutch aspects of World War II, particularly the liberation of the Netherlands through interviews by secondary school students of veterans and survivors.
It is our hope that these interviews will result not only in final projects or "profielwerkstukken" but also in a stronger connection between the young people of America and the Netherlands and their fellow citizens who fought for freedom or who withstood tyranny.
The winning proposals from each school (for ages 12-19) are then submitted to a council of students in Amsterdam of the same age, who decide which of the proposals to fund, up to a total of $3000-5000 per project.
