In retrospect the last episode from the first season of the Next Generation is certainly remarkably tame given all the season ending cliffhangers that were to come down the road (e.g., "The Best of Both Worlds" at the end of season three).
However, "The Neutral Zone" is certainly representative of the first season where the writers tried to use plot lines from the original series whenever possible.

Trivia: There are parallels between this story and that of a 1979 "Doctor Who"; (1963) episode, "City of Death," co-written by bestselling author Douglas Adams.
Both feature a notion of time-splintering, the prevention of life evolving on Earth, and a scene of contemplating primordial ooze that will become the human race.

In fact the first time I watched this show I felt sure that Riker would mention it to her if only in passing; in hindsight it was probably conveniently left out because the creative staff didn't want to have viewers drawing comparisons between those stories.
This episode is well written and directed, and it provoked many thoughts in me. For instance, I am in my middle 30's, and if I woke up tomorrow and I was 50, in time I would be distressed how I had in a sense "lost" 16 years.
