The Battle of the Neva (Невская битва in Russian, or Nevskaya bitva), a battle between the Russian and Swedish armies on the Neva River on July 15, 1240.
The purpose of the Swedish invasion was to gain control over the mouth of the Neva and the city of Ladoga and, hence, seize the most important part of the Trade Route from the Varangians to the Greeks, which had been under Novgorod's control.
Later, Prince Alexander Yaroslavich would be nicknamed "Nevsky" (of Neva) for displaying outstanding leadership and courage during the battle.

Nevsky was in charge of defending the northwest lands of Russia from Swedish and German invaders.
After the Swedish army had landed at the confluence of rivers Izhora and Neva, Alexander and his small army suddenly attacked the Swedes on July 15, 1240 and completely destroyed them.

It was suggested in another thread that the Battle of Cannae was one of the biggest military victories of the ancient world, because of the extensive slaughter of the Roman army.
In a single battle, he was masterful but in the role as a Theatre Commander was left wanting.
Another battle that has always impressed me is Aliesia (not sure about the spelling) where Julius Ceasar built a 'Tactical Doughnut' around the town - one set of walls to keep the Gauls inside and another set to prevent a relief force from succeeding.
