Sherlock Holmes describes himself as a "consulting detective", an expert who is brought into cases that have proven too difficult for other investigators; we are told that he is on many an occasion able to solve a problem without leaving his home.
Readers of the Sherlock Holmes stories have often been surprised to discover that their author, Conan Doyle, was a fervent believer in paranormal phenomena, and that the logical, sceptical character of Holmes was in opposition to his own in many ways.
According to Baring-Gould, Sherlock Holmes was born in Yorkshire, the youngest of three sons of Siger Holmes and Violet Sherrinford.
