Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians is an encyclopedic dictionary of music and musicians, considered by most scholars to be the best general reference source on the subject in the English language.
Initially released through the vision and toil of George Grove, it was brought to a new height by Stanley Sadie and is the leading music reference source in English for both encyclopedic information and bibliographies.
The companion four-volume series, New Grove Dictionary of Opera, is the main reference work in English on the subject of opera.

Grove has several other dictionaries, opera and jazz among them, but if you can only handle one, this is the one to get.
New articles on intellectual trends (e.g., deconstruction, modernism, and postmodernism), sociopolitical movements (e.g., feminism, Marxism, and Nazism), and even animal music and sex illuminate music's various contexts far better than did the earlier New Grove's.
The dictionary depends on a large pool of contributors, most of whom hold academic positions, and our academies are beset with insufficiently acknowledged problems.

NIU Physics Professor Thomas Rossing expected his article on acoustics to be included in the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, but he didn't expect to see his biography in the prestigious work.
New editions have been produced about every 15 or 20 years since then, and the work has grown from the original four volumes to 29 volumes.
Rossing, whose research on the acoustics of musical instruments is well known, was contacted several years ago by the editors about collaborating on a major article on acoustics with colleagues in Germany, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States.
