By the time Wonder Girl was married, Robin was a college graduate and Kid Flash was converted to the new Flash, it had become hard to maintain the "teen" image.

Viewed by many as DC's X-Men, the New Teen Titans surpassed their Marvel rival and this book is the proof.
The story is actually the culmination of 4 or 5 years of Teen Titan comics, starting with #1, but "The Judas Contract" is only the last year or so.

Having written the Titans in the late 60s - I did the original origin of Wonder Girl story back then - and having a soft spot for the group, I thought it would be fun to redo the Titans, but in the more modern style at the time.
Titans was a risk for DC because Jenette Kahn, the publisher, really disliked the previous versions and wasn't sure DC should try a new one.
The Titans was a logical outgrowth of what I had already done on Tomb of Dracula where I concentrated on the characters' lives, trials and tribulations as much as I did the action.

The only place in the area that was carrying NEW TEEN TITANS was a small card store in Israel Litwack's neck of the woods.
NEW TEEN TITANS was the preeminent DC series of its day, the first title of what was then referred to as "the new DC." It combined the Marvel approach to character and story dynamics with the DC characters and the flavor of its universe.
Israel had to buy my copies of TITANS for me up until the time that I moved to Delaware at the end of 1981, since the book had horrible distribution in my area.

The Titans must expose Blood's evil intentions to the world governments, as if his name, demonic mask, and position as a cult leader wouldn't be enough of a giveaway.
The Titans at that time were a team proving their own value and they did it with this stroyline.

Deathstroke was forced to kill his son, Raven died (again), Cyborg was left catatonic in a remote-controlled robot body, the Titans were discredited and targeted as menaces by the city of New York, and everything just sort of generally went to hell.
Shortly after the disbanding of the previous group of Titans, Loren Jupiter contacted four of these now-teenage children and recruited them to form a new group of Titans, under the leadership of former JLA member the Atom (who had been de-aged recently and was once again a teenager).
This adventure brought all the Titans together for the first time in quite a while, and over the next few weeks the original five talked about reforming the group, partly out of their friendship, partly out of the responsiblility to train the next generation of heroes.

Sprung upon an unsuspecting audience in the autumn of 1980, the New Teen Titans were only expected to last for six issues.
Thank the God the fans enjoyed it so much and made it last 40 issues (from issue 41 the title was renamed Tales of the Teen Titans, and a vol.2 of the New Teen Titans was released at the same time, but that's another story.).
The new characters, Raven, Starfire and Cyborg are charcters that were very sucessfull and blended in with the rest of the team.

I loved his take on the New Teen Titans, Tomb of Dracula and, of course, his streamlining of the DC Universe called Crisis on Infinite Earths.
He is originally based on a character I had come up with in an early issue of the Teen Titans.
I think the reason there are constantly new characters over at DC is because they give a percentage.
