Woody Woodpecker - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Woody Woodpecker is an animated cartoon character, an anthropomorphic woodpecker who appeared in short films produced by the Walter Lantz animation studio and distributed by Universal Studios.
Woody was created in 1940 by storyboard artist Ben "Bugs" Hardaway, who had previously laid the groundwork for two other "screwball" characters, Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck, at the Schlesinger/Warner Bros. studio in the late 1930s.
Woody's character and design would evolve over the years, from an insane bird with an unusually garish design to a more refined looking and acting character in the vein of the later Chuck Jones version of Bugs Bunny.

Woody Woodpecker Show, The @ Toonarific Cartoons
Woody continued to appear in short films throughout the 40’s and 50’s, and in 1957, the Kellogg's company packaged these theatrical works into the syndicated package The Woody Woodpecker Show.
Walter Lantz created the famed bird, and in the show’s early days, the animator would host from his office, demonstrating how cartoons were made by showing the viewers at home such essentials as painting cels and drawing storyboards.
Woody was by far the most politically incorrect and audacious character of his time.

Chilly Willy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Two of Chilly's most notable shorts, I'm Cold (1955) and the Academy Award nominated The Legend of Rockabye Point (1955), were among the final theatrical shorts directed by Tex Avery, who ended his career at the Lantz studio (where he had begun it in the early 1930s).
When the Lantz cartoons were packaged for television in 1957 as The Woody Woodpecker Show, Chilly Willy was a featured attraction on the show, and has remained such in all later versions of the Woody Woodpecker Show package.
He appeared in newly produced animation for the first time in twenty-seven years with FOX Kids' The New Woody Woodpecker Show in 1999.

Woody Woodpecker remains popular around the world, primarily because the cartoons rely heavily on physical humor and sight gags with little dialog, and so don't need to be translated for non-English-speaking audiences.

These shows were measured by the most graphic violence, "where pain and harm were judged as extreme for most of the program and without humor," as reported by the New Zealand Herald on Saturday.
