The original series, Kolchak: the Night Stalker was a show that greatly influenced the creation of the X-Files (Frank Spotnitz of the X-Files has come full circle and is a writer and executive producer for the show).
Night Stalker follows the story of crime reporter, Carl Kolchak (Stuart Townsend) newly hired to the L.A. paper The Beacon and paired with “senior� crime reporter, Perri Reed (Gabrielle Union).
Night Stalker, like the X-Files, is about faith and the pursuit of the truth—faith in things that go bump in the night, principalities, unseen forces, and faith that there is some reason behind them all.

If Night Stalker had been given a chance to establish its own identity, this "reimagining" of the popular early '70s TV movies might have thrived.
The 2005 Night Stalker series was definitely something fresh and new - having a different feel to it than most shows on television in that year.
I bought this by mistake, thinking it was the original "Night Stalker" series which I remember watching as a kid and loving because of the characters, storylines, and general creepiness of the series.

The picture for both "The Night Stalker" and "The Night Strangler" occasionally appeasr a bit soft but, overall, the sharp images and vibrant color restores these TV classics to the way it should be viewed.
The made for tv movies Night Stalker, and the sequel The Night Strangler were ratings blockbusters in their day and were shown over and over on the network and late night Creature Feature's television.
The second feature the Night Strangler finds Carl who has since moved on from the bright lights of Vegas to the pacific northwest of Seattle where once again he is on the hunt for someone who is no longer cxonsidered human.

The pilot film, "The Night Stalker," produced by the great Dan Curtis of Dark Shadows fame, was one of the most suspenseful and engrossing horror films ever on television (or, for that matter, in the movies).
Kolchak: The Night Stalker only approached the shark towards the end of the series, which happened to last only one season, not because the series was running out of ideas, but because Darrin McGavin could no longer stand the behind-the-scenes tampering and politics.
The wretched special effects would have buried a lesser show forever, but the actors and their characters had fantastic chemistry and were a delight to watch, while everyone directly involved with the show from the actors to the writers seemed to be having a lot of fun with it.
