		"The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" is a rock and roll song written by Robbie Robertson and first recorded by The Band in 1969.
		Though never a major hit, "Dixie" was the centerpiece and soul of The Band's self-titled second album, and, along with "The Weight" from Music From Big Pink, remains the song most identified with the group.
		The song "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" is part of the The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll list.

		My brother has been wanting to hear the version of this song that Emmylou sang...I don't know where he heard it or if she recorded it...or if she sang with someone else.
		She sang it at one of the Kerry-oke's in Nashville but she's never recorded it.
		The version by Joan Baez is truly dreadful but, whilst on this subject, can I again urge anyone who hasn't got the album from which this song originally came, The Band - The Band (otherwise know as their second album) to add it to their collection.
