Nightmare Before Christmas was nominated for best original score in the 1994 Golden Globes, as well as an Oscar nomination for Visual Effects, however it lost in both cases.
When Nightmare was released on video, the general public began to discover it and it quickly gained a cult following, especially among the goth scene.

The combination of Christmas and Halloween is nearly ideal, though, so it's unlikely other variations will be attempted; really, the most interesting ones mix Halloween and something else, so they'd just seem like remakes of this film.
TNBC has successfully made the transition to DVD and actually stands as one of the best examples of some aspects of the format.
It's a Christmas film that stands up nicely to repeated viewings and also is one that you can watch any time of year and not feel stupid doing so; the same cannot be said of most holiday programs.

Nightmare is one of my favorite films, and one of the films that made me want to be an animator.
This is one way to look at a film like The Nightmare Before Christmas, as a commentary on how our culture robs symbols of their meaning and mixes them together until they serve a different purpose all together.
If only Jack could have discovered the meaning behind the Christmas wreath, or found a nativity set to ponder over… Anyway, his misguided conclusion behind all of his searching is that he is being called to “improve” Christmas by taking it over, and getting the whole town involved.

When The Nightmare Before Christmas was first released in 1993, I recall a reviewer saying, "This is the kind of story Dr. Seuss would have written if he had grown up on heavy metal and horror films." I must say that I agree.
The results are predictably disastrous, as the horrors of Halloween are mixed unevenly with the joys of Christmas: Jack, as Santa, delivers shrunken heads, large snakes, goblins, and other frightful things to the children of the world, and is eventually shot down (in his coffin-sleigh) by the military.
The real Santa is left to fix Christmas, as Jack realizes that all he really wants and needs to be is the best pumpkin king in the world.

BBC - Films - review - The Nightmare Before Christmas
Jack Skellington (voiced by Sarandon), the pumpkin king of Halloweentown, has grown bored with his lot in life and the repetitive nature of giving people a scare each Halloween.
From an original fairy tale poem and the fertile and febrile imagination of Tim Burton (the film was also known as "Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas" in the hope of lending it some extra commercial cachet) comes a wickedly dark and decidedly alternative look at every child's favourite day of the year.
From a script by Caroline Thompson, director Selick moves the action along at a brisk pace but it's Burton's characters and superb production skills (as one would expect, the confection is a truly visually sumptuous affair) that really delight.

Hollywood Gothique: Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) - Review
As a film, The Nightmare Before Christmas is probably the greatest achievement of Tim Burrton’s career, but that credit must be shared with his many collaborators, including director Henry Selick, composer-lyricist Danny Elfman, and screenwriter Caroline Thompson.
The making-of documentary helps gives some insight into the various contributions of these people, while tracing the origin of the project back to Burrton’s days at Disney (when he hoped the project would be a half-hour holiday TV special, along the lines of Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer).
Burrton’s “Vincent,” in particular, reveals a visual style that is strikingly similar to Nightmare (there is even a briefly glimpsed cat that looks the same in both films), and the fl-and-white Universal horror pastiche of “Frankenweenie” also foreshadows some of the monochromatic imagery of Halloween Town.

Infused with the Christmas customs and spirit, he decides to kidnap its fearsome ruler (with a deep mighty voice and great bulging arms, whom they call Sandy Claws (Ed Ivory)), and appropriate the Christmas holiday for his own.
In addition, he has also created a Halloween and Christmas Town (the latter clearly influenced by Dr. Seuss and the former could've been influenced by Edward Gorey's macabre style) that inspires the imagination.
From the initial Halloween song to Jack's lament, his discovery and obsessions of the wonders of Christmas, to the kidnapping of Santa Claus and the confrontation with Oogie Boogie, each piece of music heightens the magic in this fable.
