Odessa - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Odessa (Ukrainian: Одеса, Odesa; Russian: Одесса) is a city in southwestern Ukraine, a major port on the Black Sea, and the administrative centre of the country's Odessa Oblast.
Odessa's growth was interrupted by the Crimean War of 1853–1856, during which it was bombarded by British and French naval forces.
Odessa is situated (Google Map) on terraced hills overlooking a small harbor, approximately 31 km (19 mi.) north of the estuary of the Dniester river and some 443 km (275 mi) south of the Ukrainian capital Kiev.

DVD Review - The Odessa File   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
I had seen "The Odessa File" a long time ago on TV and I remembered it as being a rather good movie.
Apart from that minor distraction, "The Odessa File" is a harsh and forceful movie, that reminds viewers that under the surface of any society, forces and powers are brewing, only waiting to boil over.
In fact, "The Odessa File" is much more a social-critic movie about society’s obliviousness towards such forces, rather than a drama to bring justice to an animalistic war criminal.

Mystery Guide - The Odessa File by Frederick Forsyth   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The Odessa File is of course a piece of fiction, but many of the characters that populate it -- especially the unsavory ones -- aren't fictitious at all.
From the moment the diary of a broken and desolate concentration camp survivor lands in Peter Miller's lap, the reader is pulled along into a world of crazed Nazi revanchists, wily and vengeful Mossad infiltrators, obstructionist German bureaucrats, and a pathetic, browbeaten printer who's just a little too clever for his own good.
To this reviewer's mind, The Odessa File is the novel that established Forsyth as the heavyweight champion of his genre.

 The Odessa File
The Odessa File (1974) takes the popular Frederick Forsyth novel of the same name, which is supposedly based on actual facts and events, and presents it as a truly wonderful, tense thriller that I really enjoyed.
After the passing of an elderly Jewish survivor of a WWII concentration camp, Miller comes into possession of a diary kept by the man, one which detailed, in particular, the various crimes against humanity by Roschmann, and also seemed to indicate that the war criminal may still be alive.
As Miller infiltrates the group, his cover is eventually blown, but not before he learns of the existence of the Odessa file, documents that detail many of the members within the group, including Roschmann.

The DVD Journal | Quick Reviews: The Odessa File   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
When German journalist Peter Miller (Jon Voight) comes across the diary of an elderly German Jew and concentration-camp survivor, he becomes inexplicably obsessed with tracking down the secret ODESSA group of Nazi war criminals, and specifically Eduard Roschmann (Maximillian Schell), the butcher of Riga, whose inhumanity is chronicled in the old man's book.
Based on the best-seller by renowned spy-novelist Frederick Forsythe, The Odessa File lacks the high-tension cat-and-mouse game of The Day of the Jackal, but the plot stays on course and the performances are solid — in particular Voight, whose German accent is flawless and utterly convincing.
Jackal veteran Derek Jacobi shows up in the second half of the film for a delicious turn, and, despite little screen time, Schell's performance as the brutal SS commandant is compelling.
