The Office - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Both are set in the offices of a paper supply company, with a boss whose high opinion of his managerial skills (and his sense of humor) is not shared by his employees.
The U.S. version is set in the city of Scranton, Pennsylvania, focusing on a paper company called Dunder Mifflin.
Some have speculated that the difference is possibly less influenced by plot necessities as by the fact that in the U.S. version the character is portrayed by one of the writer/producers for the show.

The Office (US) - Roobarbs DVD Forum
I've seen the US pilot episode and while it's not exactly a work of genius, I never subscribed to the school of thought that said the UK one was either.
If the US version has just tried to get Brent and not also paid attention to Tim, Gareth and Dawn (and even Neil or Big Keith) then it will fall flat on it's face, as Brent alone is not enough to sustain an entire series.
Of course, the UK - US examples you mentioned all featured highly (I'm a fan of Sanford and Son more than the original, personally) and there was also a strong focus on the US launch of Coupling, which was set to go live at about that time.
