In conformity with the traditional colours of the House of Lords and the House of Commons at Westminster, London, the carpet and upholstery in the Senate are red and those in the House of Representatives are green.
The Speaker's Chair in the House of Representatives is a replica of the original one in the House of Commons, and was presented to the House of Representatives in 1926 by the United Kingdom Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.
The Senate and House of Representatives gardens on either side of the building were regarded from the beginning as an integral part of the complex and are significant for their association with Members of Parliament and Senators as a place for them to retire for relaxation, reflection and recreation.

Carew's house, (later renamed Chichester House after a later owner Sir Arthur Chichester) was already a building of sufficient importance to have become a temporary home of the Kingdom of Ireland's law courts during the Michaelmas law term in 1605.
The House of Lords was presided over, as in the English and British parliaments, by the Lord Chancellor, who sat on the woolsack, a large seat stuffed with wool from each of the three kingdoms, England, Ireland and Scotland.
Though parliament itself was based on the exclusion of Irish Catholics, many catholic nationalist historians and writers blamed the absence of parliament for the increased impovertisation of Dublin, with many of the large mansions in areas like Henrietta Street sold to unscrupulous property developers and landlords who reduced them to tenements.

Located between the Queensland Institute of Technology and the Brisbane River, Old Government House was built in 1862 when the population of Brisbane was a mere 6,000 people.
Old Government House is currently used as the offices for the National Trust of Queensland.
The colonial architect, Charles Tiffin, was awarded the commission to build Parliament House after he had won an Australia wide competition with his unusual imitation of the French Renaissance style.

The original concept was for Parliament House to be freely open to the public, and the sweeping lawns leading up to the entrances were intended to symbolise this.

Constructed around the time of the first world war, the Old Parliament House was always intended as a temporary home (building plans were simplified because of budgetary constraints, what with the cost of fighting a war).
The architect who designed Parliament House was influenced by the straight lines and axes of landmarks around Capitol Hill, Washington D.C. and this explains the similarities.
Old Parliament House can be seen in the distance (white building), and beyond that the Australian War Memorial (a few tiny pixels in this photo!).

I moved from Sydney to Brisbane and for the next nine years, when Parliament was meeting in Canberra, I would board the plane on Tuesday morning and fly to Canberra with the Queensland-based MHRs, Senators, Ministers and staff, and then return on the Friday morning, staying at Brassey House in Canberra.
I was Senator Harradine's secretary, based in Parliament House, for sixteen years from 1975 until 1992 and transferred with him from Old Parliament House to the new building in 1988.
