  Old Well Tour Stop
At the heart of campus stands the visual symbol of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
For many years the Old Well served as the sole water supply for Old East and Old West dormitories.
In 1897, the well was given its present decorative form at the direction of President Erwin A. Alderman, who described his beautification project as largely derived from the Temple of Love in the Garden of Versailles.

 Digging A Well By Hand
First, only a shallow well was necessary as the water from the stream or lake would seep through the rocks and earth to fill the well.
The space required for digging it required that the diameter of the well be quite large so the well digger would have room to maneuver with his pick, a short handled shovel and a heavy steel bar.
Other wells had a large wooden beam over the top of the well opening, with a cable going from the bucket, up through a pulley on the beam, then the cable was hooked to the harness of a horse or mule which pulled the water up in a very large bucket.

It was a gravel well, drilled at 6-in.

DEQ - Abandoned Well Contamination Cases
The contractor abandoned the well and drilled a replacement well 60 feet away to the same depth as the old well.
While preparing one of the wells for cementing, it was found that gray water from the basement laundry in the farmhouse drained into the well.
It was determined that many of the old well casings had corroded at the upper aquifer interface and allowed the contamination to migrate to the lower formations.

Wellowner.org - Old, Unused Wells/   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Wells may have been constructed by drilling, augering, jetting, or even by digging a hole or excavating around a spring or seepage.
In an area where wells penetrate more than one water-bearing layer, contaminants may reach the ground water zone of the old well and then travel on to other portions of the aquifer.
Abandoned dug wells do not typically lead to contamination risk for deep aquifers, but their wide diameter, usually 3 to 5 feet, creates a physical safety hazard for construction equipment in addition to a danger to people and animals that may be injured falling into the well.

Recovering an old well ..... - Terry Love's Plumbing & Remodel advice forum
Would I be better off going back to an old style hand pump and use it for small watering tasks, etc. An 1860's map of the area shows springs surrounding the property.
My engineered solution, given your 4 ft diameter well and apparent capacity of maybe 6 gallons per minute, would be to hang a 1/2 HP shallow well jet pump about 10 to 15 feet down in the well (Maximum 20 ft or so above the water, lower is better).
Since it is a low capacity well, I would put a float switch in the bottom of the well to shut off when the water goes low (Get a Normally Open "load duty" switch; USA BlueBook 47709 or 47710, 800-548-1234).
