The Omega Man script turned Matheson's vampires into albino plague victims, which was OK, but it also turned them into a religious cult with anti-technology beliefs.
Most of the scenes in Omega Man would be better underscored with silence, or with natural noises ala Bergman or Tarkovsky, or with modern horror techniques - like low, slow repetitious drumbeats (ala The Hole or Angel Heart), or even with classic horror techniques like the sudden shrieking sounds in Psycho.

The only normal (a word I use extremely loosely) man seemingly left alive is Charlton Heston's Robert Neville, who hides from The Family by night and goes looting for horrendously bad tracksuits by day.
Before 28 days later, there was the Omega Man. Armed with an arson and bloodlust, Hestion goes after a group of zombies that share both their keen fashon sense and radical political views with the Unibomber.
The Omega Man isn't as great as I remembered it when I was a kid, but it still is a good movie and other than Night of the Living Dead, this movie kept you wondering what was going to happen till the very end.

Whilst camp celluloid like 'Blackenstein', 'Blacula' and 'Ganja and Hess' delighted audiences with their exaggerated reflections on fl culture, the 'Omega Man' with its stark depiction of 'fls' being turned 'white' by an unseen pathogen, was analogous to and underscored the insecurity many African-Americans felt about their newly emerging identity.
'The Omega Man' is a downbeat, yet compelling portrait of isolation and an exemplary manifestation of its time.

I consider The Omega Man to be a classic of the sci-fi genre and it is with great joy that I welcome the film to the DVD format.
In the novel, the infected population were vampires and the character of Neville was not a military man. However, as this film was made in 1971, it is easy to see why these changes were made.

Like the earlier The Last Man on Earth, The Omega Man is based on Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend, the first (and, in my opinion, still the best) modern revisionist vampire novel.
This is a man who has made a big name for himself by convincing people that the plague was a punishment from God for the use of technology.
The Omega Man may not be too satisfying as an adaptation of I Am Legend, or as a remake of The Last Man on Earth, but it’s just fine taken as a free-standing movie all its own.

In fact Grainer was so proud of his theme for The Prisoner that he reworked it, somewhat obviously, into this score, and I suppose quite appropriately as both stories feature one defiant man trying to maintain some form of dignity amidst a menacing and decaying society.
A nice unlisted addition at the end of the album is a snatch of a recording session of kids rehearsing Old MacDonald Had a Farm for the movie.

In films such as Planet of the Apes (1968), Soylent Green (1973), and The Omega Man (1971), Heston played the only man who was strong enough, smart enough, and had enough moxie to do what normal Homo sapiens could never dream of.
Although generally considered inferior, Last Man is actually a stronger movie than Omega Man and follows its own logic much better, without the distractions of big special effects, confusing symbolism, or baffling Heston-isms delivered grimly through a clenched jaw.
While we can certainly forgive Lisa, her groovy outfits, her Black Power 'fro, and expressions like "this is a honkey's paradise" as merely signs of the time, there is something kind of disturbing about how Neville—the powerful, martyred white man—uses his strong, WASP blood to save the "sinners"—namely, the fls and the hippies.
