In Whistledown and The Optimists the theme linking both films is the death of childhood and the regulation of childish imagining.
Their disillusionment when the truth is revealed marks their passage into adulthood.
A similar event occurs in the Optimist of NineElms where two children are forced to abandon a friendship with an eccentric street entertainer who arouses the suspicion of other adults.

The Optimists of NineElms (1973), was screened almost exactly thirty years to the day of its original performance on the Theatre's opening night back in October, 1974.

Other film roles included a concert pianist in The World of Henry Orient (1964), a TV star in There's A Girl In My Soup (1970) and a busker in The Optimists of NineElms (1973).
The last film he appeared in was The Fiendish Plot of Dr Fu Manchu (1980).
Peter Sellers was a uniquely one-off talent, who frankly cannot be replicated (neither can TH be though).
His best work for me are his early British films, "Dr Strangelove", "Being There", "The Optimists of NineElms" (good London film this...) and perhaps above all, "Lolita" (that bizarre, cold, slippery performance deserves far more acclaim than it gets).
His style was suited to very complex, edgy material, yet so rarely did he get that sort of project.
He is quickly robbed and comes under the wing of the streetwise low life Dave (Norman Beaton)...
Black Joy (1977) is an odd comedy from the writer/director Anthony Simmons who had previously written and directed the Peter Sellars film The Optimists of NineElms (1973) and also worked as a director on A Touch of Frost (1992).

Although he was acclaimed for his roles in "I'm Alright Jack", "Dr Strangelove" and "Being There", he seems destined to be forever linked with the exploding 'berms' and pratfalls of the bumbling 'lerwa' enforcer, Inspector Clouseau, in the "Pink Panther" series of films.
