The college also has four local fraternities (called "societies"): The Franklin Society, The Lancer Society, The Orthogonian Society (founded by Nixon), and the William Penn Society; as well as five local sororities: The Palmer Society, The Ionian Society, The Metaphonian Society, The Thalian Society, and The Athenian Society.
The source of the QC wiretap was never conclusively proven, but one strong theory suggested that disgruntled members of the student government planted the bug to spy on student journalists during the early 1990s, when ongoing tensions between the faculty and the Orthogonian Society were reported in the newspaper.

Whittier College's Orthogonian Society, a fraternal organization co-founded in 1930 by Richard M. Nixon, honored its most famous member today with the dedication of a memorial monument in his honor.
The Orthogonians are one of nine student societies at Whittier College (five for women, four for men).
Nixon co-founded the society with his friend Dean Triggs, and although he was only a freshman, Nixon was elected the group's first president.

As President of the American Astronomical Society, I was very disappointed by the comments attributed to you in an article inthe August 2nd, 2005 Washington Post regarding intelligent design.
While we agree that “part of education is to exposepeople to different schools of thought”, intelligent design has neither scientific evidence to support it nor an educational basis for teaching it as science.
