Topic: The Other Railway

The Origin of the Railway Semaphore
It is common knowledge that the first railway semaphore was erected by Charles Hutton Gregory on the London and Croydon Railway (later the Brighton) at New Cross, southeast London, in the winter of 1842-1843 on the newly enlarged layout also accommodating the South Eastern Railway.
The railway semaphore is an immediate descendant of the apparatus for optical telegraphs that were used from about 1793 until superseded by the electromagnetic telegraph, a process that was complete on land lines by 1850.
When position-light railway signals were developed in 1915 on the Pennsylvania Railroad, five lamps in a row were used at first, later reduced to three, and the eye proved as sensitive to the orientation of the lights as it was to the directional contrast of the semaphore.

According to plan the railway should pass from Innokentievskaya station (now Irkutsk-Sortirovochny) first 15 km by the present-day cargo line around Irkutsk, then along the left bank to Vvedenshchina (according to the preliminary variant in 1890 - to Shamanskiy rock), where construction of bridge over Irkut had been planned.
They differed each other by folds through which the railway was to approach the northern tunnel's portal.
The railway was to stretch 3 km along irkut after the tunnel and then to turn go off from the river Irkutnaya Ilcha to watershed with the river Kultuchnaya Ilcha.

A plan to build an extension of the railway between Moeara and Pakanbaroe had been devised back in 1920 to provide a connection between Padang and Singapore faster than the long sea routes around the north or south tips of the island.
Perhaps there may be others of the FEPOW organisation who were on the Sumatra line apart from the Rev. Johns.

Midland Railway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was formed in 1844 by the merger of the Midland Counties Railway, the North Midland Railway, and the Birmingham and Derby Junction Railway.
Alomst immediately, it took over the Leicester and Swannington Railway and the Sheffield and Rotherham Railway in 1845, but it was not until 1870 that a through route via Sheffield to the north was opened, from Chesterfield.
In common with other railways, they shared running rights on some lines, but they also developed lines in partnership with other railways, and were involved in more such 'Joint' lines than any other railway.

The special difficulties during planning and construction of this oldest largescale mountain railway were given by the surrounding landscape of the involved districts in Lower-Austria and Styria: first in the history of railway a technical sophisticated railway-route was buildt across an alpine pass.
The Semmering railway is the first railway line section crossing the high mountains and because of that special attention was given to railway operation from the beginning.
Therefore, the Semmering railway is not only in full railway operation as a main line with international importance up to now but also a railway about which fundamental international railway-history was written.

The major constituents of the Southern Railway were the London and South Western Railway, the London, Brighton, and South Coast Railway and the combined systems of the South Eastern Railway and the London, Chatham and Dover Railway, called the South Eastern and Chatham Railway.
In the area south and east of London the Southern Railway was a virtual monopoly, while its lines to the south-west were largely in competition with the Great Western Railway.
This is partly because the area covered by the railway encompassed the most populated areas of the nation and much of the commutable zone around London.
