Indeed, the greatest outsider artist of all was British – the Victorian painter Richard Dadd, who was locked up as a criminal lunatic for killing his father, but went on to produce at least two world class Outsider Art masterpieces: The Fairy Feller’s Masterstroke (Tate Britain) and Oberon and Titania (Andrew Lloyd Webber collection).
Moreover, the first person to actually depict Outsider Art in the making was William Hogarth, who included a lunatic drawing on a wall in his 1735 engraving of the Royal Bethlem Hospital for the Insane (the painting was part of his sequence The Rake’s Progress).
Yet, the appalling fact is that the only place in the UK dedicated to Outsider Art is a tiny brown bungalow – perhaps known to regular FT readers [see FT137:48], but not to the general public – hidden away in the grounds of the new Royal Bethlem, in South London.

 The Outsider
THE OUTSIDER is an unsentimental yet profoundly moving story of one family's experience with mental illness.
Rich in imagery and poignant symbolism, and framed by the author's highly personal dialogue with the reader, THE OUTSIDER moves beyond more straightforward portraits of mental illness to create a suspenseful and moving account of a son's search for the truth behind his father's haunted, solitary existence.
It is a beautifully written memoir of a father's struggle to survive with dignity, and a son's struggle to know the father he lost to schizophrenia long before he finally lost him to death.

Prison Art - The Outsider Pages
Prison artists are textbook outsiders, creating apart from the art world, with little or no formal training, under unsupportive conditions.
Noble Indians, sinewy basketball players, jungle animals, rugged princess warriors, pretty landscapes, celebrity portraits, fantasy beefcake: Most prisoners who try their hand at art make the same kind of uninspired, tediously rendered stuff that is liable to result from the artistic efforts of any more or less random population with time on its hands.
But just as clearly creative outsiders have their work roped in with labored imitations of eccentricity -- or the merely quaint -- the efforts of the notorious and the bored are not all there is to prison art.

He defines the outsider as a person that "sees too deep but can't help it"; a person that instinctively feels he doesnt fit in, becomes troubled by that, and sets out on a personal journey of discovering himself and his position toward everything else.
Wilson studies the message many outsiders have "transmitted" throughout history, philosophers, authors, dancers, painters, artists in general.
He looks for parallels amongst them as he tries to interpret and define them, looks for common (but also for uncommon) points, but more importantly looks to detect what it is exactly that disatisfies them about the world they find themselves in.
