About the Film || Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin
BROTHER OUTSIDER: THE LIFE OF BAYARD RUSTIN has received major funding from the Independent Television Service, the National Black Programming Consortium, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and a number of private foundations and funders (see list).
Though Bayard Rustin did not keep a journal, the film uses his first-person voice wherever possible, gleaned from his extensive writings (compiled in the volume Down the Line, published in 1971, and other unpublished collections), papers and personal correspondence, and numerous recorded interviews.
Beyond this, Rustin’s and other first-person voices contrast with excerpts from Rustin’s FBI files, which present J. Edgar Hoover’s view of Rustin as a "suspected communist and known homosexual subversive." BROTHER OUTSIDER creates an aesthetic that reflects Rustin’s position as an outsider, a troublemaker and an eloquent speaker who refused to be silenced.

CBC.ca - Arts - Film - The Outsider Makes His Exit
Altman’s films are at once naturalistic, but also consciously filmic; one is always aware of the camera at play even as it pretends to hover and eavesdrop invisibly.
In the two films for which he will be most remembered, the campaign satire Nashville (1975) and the macabre Korean War sex romp M*A*S*H (1970), he showed a country suspicious of institutions, collapsing on itself in a flurry of slapstick and deceit.
Altman would ask everyone, including electricians and gaffers, to watch his films’ rushes (footage of scenes shot that day), and he claimed that he would often be as surprised as his colleagues at what he saw.

 Outsider review
As "The Outsider" opens, a woman named Rebecca Yoder, her husband, and young son are leading a quiet simple life in an unnamed area of the untamed West.
The entire middle section of the film is a slow, one might say excruciatingly slow, evolution of these two disparate people and the relationship that develops between them.
Westerns were once the main staple of film and TV drama, although they have fallen out of favor in recent years.

DVD Outsider: Apocalypse Now DVD review
This is the magic of cinema, that a film can so excite the viewer, whether it be emotionally, intellectually or just for the sheer beauty of the filmmaking, that for two or three hours the pairing of the right viewer with the right film can lead to true love.
The film is actually spread over two discs and the likelihood is that a form of branching was used to present two cuts from essentially the same transfer.
A fellow film student, one who has done rather well in the industry and thus shall remain nameless, was cheerfully pouring scorn on all aspects of the film.

 Doc Holliday: Film Characterizations
Most of the events in the film Tombstone, are, of course, adaptations of events that actually occurred, although they are condensed in timeframe and dramatized or stylized for the screen.
Of course, the film does not show the subsequent events: Doc and Johnny’s standoff and Doc’s injuring the Oriental bartenders who refused to return his weapons—and who attempted to pistol-whip him when he returned to the saloon re-armed in spite of them.
In this film, Quaid's Doc remarks after Morgan Earp's death that he loved him like he was his "own little brother." Doc was indeed fond of Morgan, but he was actually a few months younger than Morgan as well, making Doc the youngest of Wyatt Earp's OK Corral foursome.

Imagine a film with no story, no cast list, no dialogue, and that is made up completely of badly decayed nitrate film clips.
Despite the varying content of the film extracts, this is not about the images on display, but the decay itself, the damage that the film has suffered over during its decades of storage in locations that were sometimes far from ideal.
Having sat through untold film prints in less than perfect condition and winced at the scratches and fluff and damage that build with every reel change, I was being asked to engage with a film in which that very damage is the film's sole raison d'être.

 Outsider, The (2006): Reviews
The Outsider, a feature-length documentary from first-time writer/director Nicholas Jarecki, is a film about film, specifically, the power of film to create, to move, and to endure.
Filmed over an 8-month period, The Outsider follows Toback through all phases of the making of his new film (shooting, editing, scoring, and release).
Apart from those worthy functions, The Outsider is also shrewdly made, illuminating its subject in a variety of settings and, at times, subtly assuming the style of Toback's films.

The outsider   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Robert Altman is one of the genuine rebels of American film, that rare director who has made a career not just outside the studio system, but tilting at it -- not just spurning the Hollywood establishment, but in open defiance of it.
If it seems ironic that this quintessential outsider is now being honored by the ultimate "insider" organization -- the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which is recognizing him with an honorary Oscar at the age of 81 -- to his admirers, it is only fitting.
While he continued to make studio films during the rest of the 1970s, most were financial disappointments, and, partly because of that, he never endeared himself to many studio bosses.

One of the pleasures of watching films set in Britain is that the best of them tell us where we live, which is not as straightforward as you might suppose.
The most intriguing thing is that the more revealing the film is about Britain, the greater the chances are it may have been made or written by the son or daughter of immigrants, whose roots are not British at all.
One of the things he hopes his film will do (for it is definitely a movie with conscience or, just possibly, an Italian heart) is to impress upon us the importance of not making reflex judgments about each other.

In "The Outsider," director Nicholas Jarecki explores the landscape of that world, and the film is an ideal introduction to Toback's output as well as a welcome elucidation for longtime fans.
With the creation and distribution of that film as his documentary's anchor, Jarecki proceeds to tell the story of Toback's career and personal obsessions, his bouts with compulsive gambling, his sexual explorations and his youthful experimentation with LSD, which ended in disaster.
"The Outsider" shows the highs and lows of making films outside the Hollywood system, when the focus and exhilaration of the filmmaking is followed by a struggle to find distribution.

Toback, whose finest hour was when his screenplay for "Bugsy" was nominated for an Oscar in 1992, feverishly churns out a new film every few years, each a variation on the same themes.
"The Outsider," the debut film from Nicholas Jarecki, follows Toback through the filming of 2004's "When Will I Be Loved," interspersing that footage with interviews of fondly disposed Toback acquaintances, including Woody Allen, Brett Ratner, Roger Ebert and Norman Mailer.
Having wrapped his film, Toback discusses the bidding war between distributors he's sure is imminent, which, as time passes, becomes simply finding a distributor, period — there are downsides to buying into your own bullshit after all.

Metapsychology Online Reviews - Outsider Art
Outsider Art is a collection of essays that deal with the question of the artistic canon and the art that does not immediately find itself to be situated within the canon.
Outsider Art, questioning how the outside/inside boundary is constructed and historical, operates from a post-modern position.
While Outsider Art seems to make a concerted effort to destabilize artistic canons, both by demonstrating their historicity and by challenging their validity, the book in the final analysis falls into a trap lodged in the heart of post-modernity in general.
