DVD Talk Review: The Outsiders: The Complete Novel
On its surface, The Outsiders is a deceptively simple story — a timeless class struggle as seen through the eyes of wayward teenagers that has resonated with new generations of youthful readers for close to four decades — Oklahoma native S.E. Hinton's 1967 novel has been required reading for legions of high school students.
The teenage years are highly charged and overly emotional ones, a mindset that Hinton (and by extension, director Francis Ford Coppola) captured perfectly: it's no mystery why this story continues to resonate with generation after generation of teens who feel "outside" the norm and need to identify with something.
The Outsiders: The Complete Novel is presented in a gorgeous, nearly flawless 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer that suffers from slight grain (more noticeably in the restored scenes) and occasional flecks but otherwise looks absolutely sterling, betraying its age.

The satiric campus novel, in its contemporary form, begins with a cluster of novels written in the 1950s: Kingsley Amis’s Lucky Jim (1954) and Malcolm Bradbury’s Eating People is Wrong (1959) in Britain; Mary McCarthy’s The Groves of Academe (1953) and Randell Jarrell’s Pictures from an Institution (1954) in the United States.
The problem of making distinctions that identify the satiric campus novel is intensified by the tendency of the novel and satire to overlap.
But a novel feels like satire when the reader senses that irony, analysis, and attack are more important than empathy for the central characters.

The Outsiders relies largely on archival footage from the period and present day commentary that sometimes comes off a bit too wistful, so perhaps Coppola is on to something by keeping the entirety of extras to little more than one hour.
As a package, this new DVD confirms this, with the director, author, and actors gushing over the film, mainly because it came at a central point in all of their lives.
From Hinton, who needed a big adaptation, Coppola, who desperately needed a hit, and the young actors who were scratching and clawing to make it in an unforgiving town, this sentiment is real, and it carried over into the soul of the picture.
