Topic: The Owl Service

SF REVIEWS.NET: The Owl Service / Alan Garner
The "service" of the title refers to a set of tableware found in a musty attic, not any sort of business enterprise.
Anyway, it turns out that the plates — which bear curious drawings of leaves and owls — are linked to an olde local legend about a young girl who was magically brought to life out of flowers, and how she spurned her lover for another man, leading to the expected tragic confrontation.
Is the owl service linked somehow to our modern day heroes, particularly Alison (the stepdaughter of the cottage's owner) and Gwyn (a local boy who knows lots about the legend), who are tap dancing around each other in an unrequited love?

With its new Night Owl service, the MBTA is finally giving some Bostonians a car-free way to get home after 1 a.m.
But as the service begins its trial run, local activists have been raising concerns about whether the T might be sabotaging the project with poor promotion and an insufficient schedule.
Besides, if Night Owl service is supposed to make the city’s nightlife accessible as long as the bars are open, its schedule is self-defeating.

The Owl Service interprets a story from the Welsh Mabinogion, namely, portions of the story of "Math Son of Mathonwy." In this story Math's niece, Arianhrod, is tricked into giving birth when her claim to virginity is tested.
Bloduwedd can either be flowers or owl; Lleu can be either the lord of the valley and her partner, or he the betrayed lover and she the vindictive mother.
Owl Service is the best of his young adult stories because Garner does all this without resorting to plot tricks like traveling through time (Elidor) or populating the story with wizards, elves, dwarves and goblins ("The Alderly Tales": The Wierdstone of Brisingamen and The Moon of Gomrath).

A week prior to the beginning of service, many people hadn’t even heard of the Night Owl and advertisement seemed mostly limited to tiny signs emblazoned with a little yellow owl near T stops.
However, people are taking advantage of the Night Owl service, while one MBTA employee referred to the program as “a Band-Aid over a gunshot wound." Indeed, while it is helpful to have late night service on Friday and Saturday nights, the service doesn’t run all night, nor does it run seven days a week.
While the Night Owl has managed to stay alive through the end of June, its future is tenuous, even with all of its promoters in the state House, its support from city councilors like Mike Ross who also spoke at the advisory board meeting on Tuesday and organizations like MassPIRG.

The Night Owl service, begun in 2001, has been singled out for elimination first, because revenue from its relatively small ridership does not come close to covering the $1.4 million annual cost.
But cuts in service must also be considered, and routes with low ridership are the natural first candidates, the official said.
