It is Proposition 73, the parental notification initiative, which has raised the hackles of the state’s abortion backers and which Samuel Alito or whoever becomes the next Supreme Court justice might ultimately have to adjudicate.
In other states, when parental notification laws make teenagers choose between talking with parents or having illegal or unsafe abortions, some teens choose the illegal abortion, even though it is dangerous.
Prop 73 defines abortion as causing the "death of the unborn child, a child conceived but not yet born." While this is troubling, for obvious reasons, to opponents of Prop 73, the rhetoric of the campaign has not touched upon the deep and divisive questions of abortion.

Every time a working parent has to risk a job to take a sick child to the doctor, and every time parents have to leave their children home alone or entrust them to inadequate supervision, families are paying the price for our outdated policies.
At a minimum, U.S. day-care facilities must be held to higher standards than they are now, and parents should be eligible for subsidies, so that they do not have to shoulder the cost of this care all on their own.
We need a new approach to our social-insurance system, one in which control and responsibility lie with individuals, not their employers, and in which government subsidies are granted based on an individual's ability to pay, rather than on whether he or she works full time, part time, or flex time.

For many parents of adult homosexuals, their support of gay and lesbian issues has sprung directly, although not always painlessly, from the process of accepting their children.
Most of these parents grew up in an age in which marriage between men and women of differing religions and different races was socially aberrant.
The debates, struggles, and reconciliations that have been playing out in parents' living rooms are no less emotional and passionate than the more public debate that has been raging around the state since the Supreme Judicial Court ruled in November that gays and lesbians have the legal right to marry under the Massachusetts Constitution.

The original Parent Trap was made by Disney in 1961 as a modest, journeyman production, boosted by a breakthrough performance from Hayley Mills as twin 14-year-old sisters who scheme to reunite their divorced parents, played by Maureen O'Hara and Brian Keith.
The Parent Trap has been refashioned by director Nancy Meyers and her producing partner, Charles Shyer, the Private Benjamin team who brought a high gloss to the 1991 Father of the Bride.
Although the new Parent Trap is an improvement, it doesn't solve all the problems.

The Parent Trap & The Parent Trap II: 2-Movie Collection DVD Review
The girls' goal of bonding with their respective unknown parents in the hopes of a happy reunion suffers a blow upon the news that their father has met and fallen for a pretty young woman named Vicky Robinson (Joanna Barnes).
Sharon and Susan continue to conspire to put their parents back together, as either more likely alternative -- a "6-month split" or Dad's marriage to the conniving Vicky -- is less than desirable for the growing girls and new best friends.

The Parent Trap: College Vs. Retirement
As parents, we may have different attitudes and motivations, and experience different constraints and conflicting priorities when it comes to saving and investing for our long-term financial future.
Illustrating the point, a survey commissioned by Schwab found that while nine out of 10 parents believe a college education is essential to their children's future success, the soaring costs of college leave many doubting whether they’ll have adequate funds to cover the expense.
Today, it seems, parents tend to put off having children until later in life—even into their 40s.

It occurred to me while watching Disney's remake of "The Parent Trap" that parents who could, as part of a divorce, agree to separate their newborn twins forever and act as if each was an only child, are people who are pretty screwed up.
Each twin's reunion with her long-lost parent is surprisingly touching as they try not to blow their cover despite the tears rolling down their cheeks.
Both girls plan to spend as much time as they can with the other parent before being found out, but Brit Annie (pretending to be Californian Hallie) puts their reunion plan in overdrive after meeting Meredith, Dad's pretty, young, prima donna fiancee (Elaine Hendrix, "Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion").

Fathers' advocates claim abuse allegations are routinely used to deny divorced fathers contact with their children and to poison children's minds against their fathers, in what the activists and some psychologists call "parental alienation syndrome." Feminists argue that well-founded accusations of abuse are often dismissed and even turned against the accusing mothers.
The explosive claim that batterers and molesters frequently gain sole custody of their children while protective mothers are branded as liars has gotten a lot of media attention in the last year.
The records generally paint a depressing picture of two parents behaving badly, rather than a case in which a clear line can be drawn between wrongdoer and victim.

Vladimir Putin thinks so, as he plans to offer generous parental benefits to encourage citizens to have more children, something that's necessary as Russia's population is in absolute decline.
But in recent decades, a collection of parenting "experts" and safety-fascist types have extinguished some of the benefits while raising the costs, to the point where what's amazing isn't that people are having fewer kids, but that people are having kids at all.
Flanagan's book is mostly a comparison of her own housewifely and maternal life with that of her mother, and one thing that struck me is how much of what counted as acceptable -- or even exemplary -- parenting a generation ago would now be considered abuse and neglect.

Passionate love affairs of the young are seldom understood by their elders, and although parents cannot always be specific about their concerns, an unusually wide generation gap feeds fears that children are off in dangerous places.
They are about resistance to revising concepts of childhood (including modes of parenting and schooling) shaped in a bygone epoch.
In fact the knee-jerk preference for a schoolish teaching program over a game reflects a concept of children needing to be taught by being told, rather than by being encouraged to take charge of their own learning.
