Eleven-year-olds Hallie and Annie were split at an early age when their parents Nick (Quaid, The Rookie) and Elizabeth (Richardson, Maid in Manhattan) divorced, leaving Hallie to grow up on a ranch in Napa Valley, CA, while Annie lived with her mum in London, England.
The movie is also very long for a family film, clocking in at over two hours, and while it is a breezy and amiable time spent to be sure, fatigue does eventually set in somewhat.
Still, The Parent Trap benefits from being in the competent hands of romantic comedy veterans, first-time director Nancy Meyers (What Women Want, Something's Gotta GIve) and hubby screenwriting partner Charles Shyer (Father of the Bride, I Love Trouble), a duo that knows how to build up likeable characters and give them witty dialogue.

It is interesting to note that aside from the 1998 remake of "Parent Trap," other films of Maureen's also had re-makes, including "Jamaica Inn," "Hunchback of Notre Dame," "Sentimental Journey" "Miracle on 34th Street." As the tempestuous "Maggie McKendrick" Maureen fairly exploded with color and energy on the screen.
Here again, Disney's cinematographer delivered this fantastic impact of color; Maureen's red hair and peach complexion is enhanced by the two shades of blue in her blouse and skirt, and Brian Keith was dapper in his casual attire.
Note: For you O'Hara fans who have seen the remake of "Parent Trap" you might find it interesting that there were several "shades of O'Hara" in the first scenes at summer camp.

t's difficult to tell which generation of movie-goers "The Parent Trap" is aimed at: the youngsters who seem to be its obvious audience, or the parents, who harbor fond memories of Hayley Mills in the 1961 original.
But adults who succumb to those memories will find something they could have discovered had they taken the time to rent a videocassette of the original: just how tame and slow-moving that original is, when not being viewed through the rosy haze of nostalgia.
A whole movie could be made about what would possess a divorcing couple to divvy up their twins and the lifelong trauma that kind of separation could cause.

The film was shot mostly in California at various locales, including millionaire Stuyvesant Fish's 5,200-acre ranch in Carmel, Monterey's Pebble Beach golf course, and the studio's Golden Oak Ranch in Placerita Canyon, where Mitch's ranch was built.
It was the design of this set that proved the most popular, and to this day the Walt Disney Archives receives requests for plans of the home's interior design.

Martin is not afraid to cry, and meets a sympathetic counterpart in Chessy (Lisa Ann Walter), employee of Nick Parker (Dennis Quaid) and nanny to Hallie.
The slapstick humor at camp comes across well, and the very premise of the girls switching roles so that their parents would be forced to see each other lends unity of plot.
On the whole, THE PARENT TRAP appeals to such a wide audience - including adolescent boys - because it tells a story of human triumph.

SPLICEDwire: "The Parent Trap" review (1998)
It occurred to me while watching Disney's remake of "The Parent Trap" that parents who could, as part of a divorce, agree to separate their newborn twins forever and act as if each was an only child, are people who are pretty screwed up.
Each twin's reunion with her long-lost parent is surprisingly touching as they try not to blow their cover despite the tears rolling down their cheeks.
The climax is still a camping trip, during which the twins torture their mom-to-be with creepy-crawly forest dwellers, weigh down her Prada backpack with rocks and set her air mattress afloat on a lake while she's sleeping on it.

The BigScreen Cinema Guide: Reader Reviews - The Parent Trap
The producers stereotype (in the new Parent Trap) the English butler (Simon Kunz), making him into a sobbing idiot, which is in some parts funny, but it makes for corny scenes frequently.
Based on the 1961 film which stars Hayley Mills, "The Parent Trap" takes this brilliant idea: what happens when two twins (after being seperated by their parents) surprisingly meet at a camp, decide to switch places and attempt to get their parents back together.
How a Disney film, directed by Nancy Meyers (who produced the gooey "Father of The Bride" movies, among others) became this good is beyond me. Call this film the sleeper of the decade, an instant classic.

The original Parent Trap was made by Disney in 1961 as a modest, journeyman production, boosted by a breakthrough performance from Hayley Mills as twin 14-year-old sisters who scheme to reunite their divorced parents, played by Maureen O'Hara and Brian Keith.
The Parent Trap has been refashioned by director Nancy Meyers and her producing partner, Charles Shyer, the Private Benjamin team who brought a high gloss to the 1991 Father of the Bride.
As in the first film, the sisters were separated as infants as part of the divorce settlement.

Unusually, The Parent Trap is a children's film that can even be recommended for children by the most morally bound parent - although there is a divorce that may need to be explained away.
The Parent Trap was originally made in 1961 starring Haley Mills as a pair of twins who accidentally meet when they are eleven years old.

IGN: The Parent Trap (1998) Review
Lindsay Lohan's debut in the film industry, a remake of the 1961 Disney classic The Parent Trap, skyrocketed the freckle-faced tween to success, and America had another face to watch grow older.
The film starts out with a montage of a romantic night aboard a cruise ship on which Nick (Quaid) and Elizabeth (Richardson) "hooked up." Pan to nearly 12 years later, and the twins are boarding into a summer camp "resort." It's obvious as to why Lohan was cast as the twins: she's simply adorable.
The Parent Trap Special Double Trouble Edition is packed with tons of new bonus features that were not on previous releases of the film, making this one a surefire hit with Lohan collectors (or fans of the film, in general).

A more realistic project for the Bard, were he alive now, would be a film like "The Parent Trap." Nancy Meyers's romantic comedy has the elements that Elizabethan audiences were so fond of: mistaken identity, outrageous coincidences, and parallel, romantic subplots.
The 1998 film is a re-make of the sunny 1961 comedy which starred Hayley Mills in both roles.
"The Parent Trap" is filled with comic moments: the kids play ingenious but devastating tricks on one another in camp and in a couple of cases, they give their nemesis, Meredith, enough rope to hang herself in Nick's eyes.

The Parent Trap (1998) - A Review by David Nusair
The Parent Trap is exactly the sort of easy-going, endlessly engaging family film that seems to have become an unusually rare breed in this day and age.
The Parent Trap marked the final collaboration between husband-and-wife filmmaking team Nancy Meyers and Charles Shyer prior to their divorce, and it seems clear that the two work a whole lot better together than apart (ie Meyers' first post-marriage effort was the underwhelming Something's Gotta Give).
Now, this isn't to say that The Parent Trap is perfect; with a running time of over two hours, the film is a little on the long side (though it never feels overlong).

The 1998 version of "The Parent Trap" offers more of the same bubbly family fare of the original, yet another 'silly grin movie' (much like Disney's earlier summer release "Mulan").
Another problem with "The Parent Trap", or with Disney films in general, is how the complexities of relationships are oversimplified to the point of absurd artificiality.
I admit that "The Parent Trap" is clearly aimed at younger audiences, but this dated view of adult relationships strains credibility with its clear-cut perspective and perhaps sends the wrong message in an age where half of all marriages end up in divorce.

Disney's original Parent Trap was a small but successful comedy that cleverly toyed with split-screen effects and launched the career of actress Hayley Mills.
The film is refashioned by director Nancy Meyers and producer Charles Shyer, the dynamic duo responsible for Private Benjamin and the hilarious 1991 remake of Father of the Bride; unfortunately, this effort isn't nearly as engaging as their past ones.
The remake of the Parent Trap is another example of Disney self-cannibalization for profit, but this updated film doesn't break any new and exciting ground.
