BBC - Radio 1 - Keeping It Peel - Sessions
There was a mythology to Peel Sessions: musicians went into the studio to record their three or four track session, only to emerge a few hours later blinking and dazed, having made a helluva racket that would go down in history as the making of the band.
The Peel Sessions began when John realised he had to play by more rules than he was used to at pirate radio when he joined the BBC in 1967.
Peel would have a brief chat with his producer, John Walters, usually about artists that took their fancy that week.

John Peel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Peel's reputation as the most important DJ breaking unsigned acts into the mainstream was such that in 1983 unsigned artist Billy Bragg drove to the Radio 1 studios with a mushroom biryani and a copy of his record after hearing Peel mention that he was hungry, the subsequent airplay launching his career.
Peel was diagnosed with diabetes in 2001 and two weeks before his death he told friend and colleague Andy Kershaw that the move of his show, in summer 2004, back an hour from a 10pm start to 11pm, caused him a lot of stress and that he felt marginalised and unappreciated.

PJ Harvey - The Peel Sessions: 1991-2004 - Island Records - CD
Getting his notoriety with the Peels Sessions on BBC Radio with the likes of Pink Floyd, Lennon, and Bowie amongs hundreds of others, The Peel Sessions have shown an importance recognized the world over and for decades (read his biography courtesy of BBC Radio).
Thirdly, with the passing of John Peel and the possession of these tapes from PJ Harvey sessions, it becomes a tribute and a love letter to one of the most effectual DJ s in Rock’s storied history.
With 12 cuts from 5 session periods (1 of them a tribute; Peel died a little over a month before the final session on this album), the heat from this album may really be too intense.

Remembering "the Peel Sessions." - By Douglas Wolk - Slate Magazine
Peel invited very raw, very promising artists to record for him; by the late '70s, a particularly good Peel session could instantly popularize a band.
But Peel carefully avoided becoming a relic of that historical moment: He was also an early adopter of hip-hop in the early '80s, electronic dance music in the early '90s, and the British grime scene in the last couple of years.
Even in his 60s, Peel had the instinct for novelty of a 17-year-old music fanatic—his undying fondness for late-'80s grind-core bands like Extreme Noise Terror and Napalm Death was something of a joke among his listeners, few of whom shared it.

Get Ready to ROCK! Interview with radio broadcaster John Peel who is the longest serving DJ on BBC Radio 1
Most of the sessions would be memorable in their own right, and John couldn’t remember any unmemorable ones.
Of the few downsides (there’s been too many sessions for any to really stand out), there was one session that was unbroadcastable it was so bad; tactfully, John says it would be unkind to mention who it was.
Also, Morrissey (the former Smiths frontman) pulled one of his own sessions because he was unhappy with the way it turned out, and it would have been unfair to go against his wishes.

Pulp : The Peel Sessions - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
This set cuts out that long decade of struggle -- since there are no Peel sessions documenting the stilted steps forward during the '80s, those awkward transitions are nowhere to be found, which makes the leap forward from 1981 to 1993 all the more startling.
Once "Refuse to Be Blind" wraps up, The Peel Sessions jumps forward 12 years to the summer of 1993, just as Pulp was leaving the indie Gift behind for the major Island -- just as the band was beginning to blossom, actually.
It's as if that long wait to return to Peel's studios made Pulp determined to make each of their (what turned out to be many) sessions count, even when they were stars, even when they were quietly winding down their career, and that's what makes this a necessary addendum to their career.

sound of the suburbs: Peel Sessions 23
The band became firm Peel favorites, maybe because of their honest approach, nothing to do with them being from up North, and were to record four sessions between July 1985 and November 1987.
From the first one I have not chosen the most obvious of songs in 'Stand At Ease' what actually inspired my choice is the similarity between the beginning of the number and Billy Braggs early work as both artists were signed to the same label.
By the summer of '88 they were no more, leaving us with just two albums, those Peel sessions and memories of four ordinary looking lads who did a damn good job of making pop music mean something more than just pop.

Coming out at the same time as Stereolab and PJ Harvery (with both of whom they shared a record label as well as a previous Peel Sessions compilation on Strange Fruit), Th’ Faith Healers were a gritty, noisy version of their peers but were no less revelatory.
Besides displaying a band that was just as powerful when taped live as in the studio, the sessions also boast some surprises, including a few songs written for their never-recorded fourth album.
This CD compiles all the songs from the four sessions, recorded between 1992 and 1994, and sheds new light on a band that is too often overlooked when the innovators of the last decade are summarized.

These 3 relatively cheap cds (around $7.25 apiece) are a welcome blast from the recent past to the 'IDM' sound of the early to mid-90's, pre-drum 'n bass, drill 'n bass, etc. The Ae and Black Dog sessions were recorded in October of '95 and the BoC was recorded in July of '98.

On their first trip to the UK, Hot Snakes were asked by legendary disc jockey John Peel to come into the BBC studios at Maida Vale and record a session for his radio show.
