Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington star in The Pelican Brief, a Warner Brothers film based on the novel by John Grisham (The Firm), in which two supreme court justices have been killed, and there seem to be no clues to unmask the murderer.
This brief stirs up a lot of concern in the upper echelons of the government, with waves of anxiety washing as high as the White House.
The murderer is revealed early on, and it is the cleverness of motive and depth of intrigue that keeps the story exciting.

The Pelican Brief is a legal/suspense thriller written by John Grisham in 1992.
She writes a legal brief speculating that the assassinations were committed on behalf of Victor Mattiece, an oil tycoon wanting to drill for oil on swamp land currently occupied by an endangered breed of pelicans.
Government forces quickly take sides, with the President trying to cover up his connection to Mattiece, which would be politically damaging; the FBI wants to get hold of Darby to verify her story; and allies of Mattiese try to kill her to cover up the story.

Filmtracks: The Pelican Brief (James Horner)
The Pelican Brief: (James Horner) Director Alan Pakula's films have never been inclined to demand large-scale or thematically complex music out of their composers.
With many similarities in construct, The Pelican Brief would be the same score for James Horner that Presumed Innocent was a few years earlier for John Williams.
Thus, while Presumed Innocent and The Pelican Brief essentially use the same spirit of underscore (despite a more chase-oriented action tilt in the latter), Williams' tackling of the job is leagues beyond Horner's music in quality and class.

The Pelican Brief isn't up to the level of those films, but it is a perfectly entertaining movie about a law student (Roberts) whose life is endangered when she discovers evidence of a conspiracy behind the killings of two Supreme Court justices.
Young law student Darby Shaw (Julia Roberts) completes what she calls "The Pelican Brief" without fully realizing how threatening and potentially dangerous its contents could be to the administration of an incumbent president played by Robert Culp.
Problem is, *The Pelican Brief* is based on a pot-boiler by John Grisham, who, if the movies based on his stuff is any guide, couldn't concoct a plausible plot to save his life.
