Topic: The Pentagon Wars

-Pentagon may boost army spying role
The Pentagon is reportedly drawing up a plan that would give the US military a more prominent intelligence-gathering function.
Bush administration officials said the proposals, the latest in a long-standing rivalry between the Pentagon and the CIA over intelligence, were being monitored and had not yet won White House approval.
A major shift in the Pentagon's plan would be to focus military intelligence operations more on counterterrorism and counterproliferation, areas in which the CIA has always played the leading role.

Pentagon revives 'Star Wars' defense in space
Within the next five to 10 years, the Pentagon wants to have the means to both protect its essential military communications and spy satellites and destroy or disable a hostile nation's space equipment with ground or space-based weapons.
But the Pentagon's move to increase the militarization of space is expected to cause intense international controversy because it appears to violate treaties advocating the peaceful use of space.
However, Pentagon officials contend that there is a worrisome proliferation of space-based capabilities around the globe.

 Pentagon Thievery
Companies were being created on the fly to get a piece of the Iraq pie, from security firms formed by former Pentagon and CIA staffers to telecom companies who did little more than act as brokers and middlemen, where the heavy lifting was really just stuffing money into their accounts as fast as possible.
That's because by and large the Generals who run the show aren't all that anxious to start extended wars so much as to engage in threat inflation to justify their real operational mission which is to funnel billions into the coffers of the big defense firms: Lockheed, Boeing, TRW, Raytheon and the like.
Recall that the Iraq war was supposed to be a quick cakewalk, with Saddam's regime smashed to bits during the Shock and Awe air assault, and the ground forces entering Baghdad in a kind of parody of a Roman triumph.

The Defense Department began working yesterday with a private marketing firm to create a database of high school students ages 16 to 18 and all college students to help the military identify potential recruits in a time of dwindling enlistment in some branches.
The Pentagon's statements added that anyone can "opt out" of the system by providing detailed personal information that will be kept in a separate "suppression file." That file will be matched with the full database regularly to ensure that those who do not wish to be contacted are not, according to the Pentagon.

THE PENTAGON WARS originated with producer Howard Meltzer, who had read how Burton's involvement in the Bradley project changed the way weapons are tested before going into production and, more important, into service.
With the exceptions of Burton and Caspar Weinberger, the characters in THE PENTAGON WARS are composites of actual people, including the staunch General Partridge, portrayed by Kelsey Grammer.
THE PENTAGON WARS was filmed over a 30-day period in and around Los Angeles last September and October.

But in January 2003, a mere two months before the start of the war, postwar planning was wrested away from the State Department and handed to the Pentagon, which proceeded to discard the State Department-led efforts.
Perhaps not that there was a range of views, but in fact that the Pentagon inherited the planning, and sidelined the State Department's efforts seems more significant.
I had the impression that it was simply not only not appreciated, but I felt that the planners maybe, at Defense, really felt or thought that they had it all under check and they knew exactly what they were doing and they don't need this input….

Burton was assigned to the Pentagon three times and served there for a total of fourteen years, becoming totally disillusioned in the process.
Of special interest is the Epilogue, including pre- and post-Gulf War observations on weapons acquisition, employment, and operational theory.
While this thought-provoking book can possibly serve as a realistic primer to a Pentagon assignment, it also reveals the pervasiveness of “shady” and corrupt weapons testing and procurement and gross mismanagement.

The Pentagon Wars is a 1998 HBO film, starring Kelsey Grammer, Cary Elwes and Richard Schiff, based on a book of the same name.
The film tells of the test and evaluation phase of the troubled development history of the M2 Bradley fighting vehicle as described from the point of view of United States Air Force Lt. Col.
Meanwhile, they created the atmosphere for the acquisition of useful equipment such as the A-10 Warthog and F-16 aircraft that were disliked by the 'establishment' Pentagon hierarchy.

Today, carrying capacity, which is the ability for the Earth and its natural ecosystems including social, economic, and cultural systems to support the finite number of people on the planet, is being challenged around the world.
As abrupt climate change lowers the world’s carrying capacity aggressive wars are likely to be fought over food, water, and energy.
When you look at carrying capacity on a regional or state level it is apparent that those nations with a high carrying capacity, such as the United States and Western Europe, are likely to adapt most effectively to abrupt changes in climate, because, relative to their population size, they have more resources to call on.

The Pentagon Wars | The A.V. Club
The Pentagon Wars, for better or worse, is pretty much a standard HBO movie—diverting and entertaining, but also broad and simplistic in a way that never really lets you forget that you're watching a TV movie.
Set during the mid-'80s, The Pentagon Wars does a nice job showing how the self-serving dynamics of the military can lead to almost surreally wasteful projects.
But while The Pentagon Wars is intermittently funny and always interesting, it's not nearly as sharp as it could be.

John Burton (Cary Elwes) has just been assigned by the Pentagon as a weapons procurement officer in charge of signing off for the U.S.Army's Bradley fighting vehicle.
It shows how the promotion system in the military used to push for new war products to be used, even if they were not acceptable for use, and the struggle of one man to do the right thing.
Not only is The Pentagon Wars one of the funniest movies, but it has a twisted sense of how military tests programs can get when Congress and the Upper Brass try to control spending on test programs.

Iraq War Topping $5.8 Billion a Month
WASHINGTON - The Pentagon is spending more than $5.8 billion a month on the war in Iraq, according to the military's top generals.
That is nearly a 50 percent increase above the $4 billion-a-month benchmark the Pentagon has used to estimate the cost of the war so far.
Since 2003, the Pentagon has received some $160 billion for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in supplemental funding -- that is, in addition to its annual budget.

 How to Quit Smoking--Pentagon
Under the Pentagon’s plan, the government would end its subsidy of commissary tobacco products in an effort to discourage tobacco consumption among troops, and presumably save the taxpayer a few dollars at the same time.
Tobacco, the congressmen said, is not the issue; the main issue, they say, is that the Pentagon failed to consult Congress and violated federal pricing rules that require the commissaries to sell all their products at "the lowest practical price."
I found it very interesting that 11 of the 12 Congressmen on the House panel who signed that letter, trying to block the Pentagon’s new plan, had received money (contributions...or bribes?) in the two previous years from tobacco companies like Philip Morris.

The production purchased taxidermic sheep for the segment of the scene where the truck is driving away with the dead sheep that had supposedly been inside the Bradley during the test.

Some time during the late ‘80s, Lieutenant Colonel Elwes is assigned to test the new Bradley fighting vehicle and discovers it is a disastrous project.
This HBO TV movie tells the utterly absurd story of how the Bradley came to be; it portrays the Pentagon as mindlessly wasteful and ineffective, but makes sure to do it with a good sense of humor.
Scary stuff, if it’s all true, but the film is a little bland (much like its protagonist, Elwes).

Burton offers a substantial contribution to the understanding of the actual use of maneuver warfare with his section on Schwarzkopf's "left hook" tactic against Iraqi forces.
According to Burton, the reason most of Saddam's Republican Guard managed to escape the Gulf War, and have since kept their despot in power, is that the left hook units failed to reach their objective of "closing the door" behind the Iraqi retreat, as Schwarzkopf said they would.
Further, Burton asserts, some units failed, at best, to execute, and perhaps defied Schwarzkopf's order to engage and destroy as much of the Republican Guard as possible before the cease-fire took effect.
