Common People - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The song is a put down of thos people, who wanted to be like "common people" and attributed poverty with glamour.
"Common People" is a song and single by the band Pulp.
Lead singer Jarvis Cocker explains that she can never be like common people because, ultimately, "if [she] called [her] dad he could stop it all." However, Cocker admittedly embellished the occurrence of the Greek student declaring she "wanted to live like common people" — she most definitely never wanted to sleep with him!

 American Popular Song
The development of this characteristic American song style coincided with the growth of institutions in which that music, now moved out of the parlors of private homes, could be performed for the public: the vaudeville houses, musical theaters, taverns and night clubs that became increasingly common after the turn of the century.
Hearing such a song was something like filling in the blanks in a printed form: you did not have to guess at the form but could quickly see which of the common ones you already knew it was.
For most laypeople the songs were indissolubly connected to the lyrics that accompanied them (which was the case for musicians as well, most of the time).

Boston Collaborative Encyclopedia of Western Theology: Song Choan Seng
Song believes that the theological task as such enables Christians "to penetrate the facade of religions and cultures and discover their place in the common humanity of the Asians" (11).
For Song, the Asian people have been victimized by the Western industrialization and modernization.
Song’s theological construction is based on a synthesis of the liberation theology, the narrative theology, the biblical theology and the theology of culture.

 volatile.org: common people
Last night at Honey, I was happily dancing and then Pulp's Common People came on.
People ask if I want to go, and I most of the time drag myself there, until I get on the dance floor and I just don't want to stop!
This song is so evocative, reminding me of when I was 20 and 21 in Ottawa, and I was drinking a lot and staying out late because I could and my body absorbed such excesses easily then.

The Sting Forums - Common People
Posted - 02/07/2005 : 6:53:59 PM I'm probably the only one who feels this way judging on "Common People" being the number one most requested for about the last 100 years, and I'm not afraid to stand alone, but frankly, I am sick of the song.
For me it's not just a novelty song, but actually really good music from William Shatner, which is just bizarre to me. What's surprised me is the way people keep requesting it for so long.
While "Common People" grabs ones attention immediately, there are other tracks which are just as good, but aren't as novelty inspired as this one.

And I dare say, unlike Shatner who claims to not be a musician, but someone who made this cd to talk about deeply felt things he wished to share (save the fun cover of "Common People".
I can't think of a single song more suited for that treatment than "Common People".
I still think people feel pressured to say they like it just because Pitchfork gave an early review and scored them a 9.6, and that if they don't understand it, then they are just stupid.

 Halfbakery: Rapture Insurance
Even though, as people have noted, that nature of the Christian rapture is a contentious theological issue there appears to be enough common ground to allow insurance to be sold to quite a wide range of people.
It therefore does not cover divine abduction on a small scale, so the named people of saints who individually ascend to heaven are not covered by this policy.
Evidence: The soundtrack of "Police Academy 4" has an otherwise unavailable Brian Wilson song called "Let's Go to Heaven in my Car."

April 21, 2002 - Fourth Sunday of Easter
The first use of sheep as a symbol for people comes in Numbers 27 when Moses pleads with God to appoint some new person to lead the people over into the promised land "so that the congregation may not be like sheep without a shepherd." We still have a lot in common with sheep.
They must be good songs, helpful songs, for a sheep's life is not an easy one and we need all the help we can get to find our way in life these days.
This brings us to another great song for sheep called "I'm My Own Grandpa." This epic song, you will remember, is a really enticing piece, which describes the intricacies of marriage, and remarriage, which allows one to legally become one's own grandfather.

If it be a song the words must contain some sentiment common in appeal to all, sentiment touching the home, love, joy or sorrow; or the theme may be some subject which at the time is agitating the public mind.
This is the music of the people, for it becomes the popular music of the period and invariably is in the form of song.
In all of the popular songs of the early part of the present era there is to be noted a very general similarity of construction and treatment; the melodies, harmonies and rhythms are simple, though not to the same extent as those of an earlier time.
