The very popular silent Perils of Pauline was a cliffhanger (An episode that ends in suspense) serial shown in weekly instalments featuring Pearl White (additional info and facts about Pearl White) as the title character, a perpetual damsel in distress (additional info and facts about damsel in distress).
At the end of each installment she was generally placed in a situation that looked sure to result in her imminent death (The event of dying or departure from life).
