Their auspicious 1992 debut Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde anointed a West Coast version of the abstract in the gangster rap stronghold of Los Angeles.
While the heft of The Pharcyde sound is diminished slightly by their broken circle, this is an emotionally tangible album that combines delicate content with mature production.

They signed to the influential Delicious Vinyl label in 1991 and soon released Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde, which was critically praised though sales were lukewarm.

 CSIndy: A hip-hop new year (December 23, 2004)
The Pharcyde was one of the brightest rising stars of 1992's Fresh Coast (West Coast) explosion, which also included Freestyle Fellowship and Nor Cal's Hieropglyphics crew.
Pharcyde helped spearhead a fresh-faced facet of hip-hop that, while conceptually focused, was sonically engaging and lacked much of the cliché negativity associated with rap music at the time.
Pharcyde subsequently released a couple of albums (Chapter One and Plain Rap) that, while embraced by die-hard fans and underground heads, failed to live up to the commercial success of the first two major releases.

Pharcyde: Go work at the funeral home for a while (you look like you already do work there) and learn from the experts what is funny and what isn't.
So while the Pharcyde is commonly sided with the socially conscious guys, what I mean to suggest is that the Pharcyde is not Public Enemy, they are entertainers with quick messages and quicker wits, and they have once again failed to realize their own strengths.
By 2000, the skateboarders had seen the Pharcyde 600 times each and were finally beginning to remember the experience, meaning they didn't need to go see them anymore and sing along to "shot him in the ass on the downstroke".

At the time, critics and fans who opted to misread the terrible truth of this failure claimed, as the Pharcyde did in interviews and press releases, that Bizarre Ride was puerile, and that Labcabincalifornia represented a more mature side to the group.
Indeed, we can say that anything the Pharcyde has made after its debut CD has been "Martin Lawrence doing Gogol," because it is in Gogol's rejection of his masterpiece Dead Souls that we find affinities with the Pharcyde's rejection of Bizarre Ride.
Likewise, the Pharcyde's first CD lacked boundaries, a moral center, basic principles, and was charged by an energy sourced not from the refined order of heaven but the orgasmic disorder of hell.

Three fourths of the Pharcyde (Hardson, Wilcox and Robinson) met in the late '80s, not as aspiring rappers, but as dancers.

Satire and humor were Pharcyde trademarks; but the group's humor was tastefully tempered with spiritual consciousness.
In other songs, such as the poetic, blues-heavy "World," the group reminds us of life's basic reason for living: "What the world needs is a love that's sweeter than melody." And while the Pharcyde may have never been gangstas, this proposition is a revolution of the highest order.

Hardson, Wilcox, and Robinson were all dancers and choreographers who met on the L.A. underground club circuit in the late '80s, worked together for a while, and served a stint as dancers on In Living Color.
After support slots for De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest as well as a successful spot on Lollapalooza's second stage in 1994, the group released its second album, Labcabincalifornia, which was calmer than their first but no less warped.
After a five-year break which saw little action except for the debut of Stewart as a solo rapper (his single "What's Up Fatlip" became an underground hit), the Pharcyde returned in late 2000 with their third album, Plain Rap.

The cover shot of a Fat Albert-ized Pharcyde roller coasting their way into a funhouse makes perfect sense, as the L.A.-based quartet introduced listeners to an uproarious vision of earthy hip-hop informed by P-Funk silliness and an everybody-on-the-mic street-corner atmosphere that highlights the incredible rapping skills of each member.
Though Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde could have used a few more musical hooks to draw in listeners before they begin to appreciate the amazing rapping and gifted productions, the lack of compromise reveals far greater rewards down the line.
