The results of this bias against fl defendants in Philadelphia is estimated to be an excess of 38% in death sentences for fl defendants compared to all other defendants for similar crimes.
Stated differently, in Philadelphia, the capital sentencing statute has operated as though being fl was not merely a physical attribute, but as if it were one of the most important aggravating factors actually justifying the death penalty.
In the Philadelphia study, the racial combination which was most likely to result in a death sentence was a fl defendant with a nonfl victim, regardless of how severe the murder committed.

Philadelphia was the orchestra that set the standard for symphonic recording.
Desperate to find a recognisable name in a dwindling maestro pool, a fretful board of directors and its impatient chairman Richard Snoot imposed him on the musicians without consultation, or election (as is increasingly the case with enlightened orchestras).
He cannot spare Philadelphia more than a fraction of his expensive time - though he did fly in recently for a day to secure a welcome $50 million bequest from the widow of a local newspaper magnate.

Justice on the Cheap: The Philadelphia Story
While the population of Philadelphia County is just two percent larger than that of Allegheny County (Pittsburgh), the percentage of those sentenced to society's ultimate penalty is nearly eleven times (11) greater in the former than in the latter, though Philadelphia's murder rate is only about three times greater than Pittsburgh's.
Indeed, many Philadelphia lawyers identify the DA's practice of overcharging in homicide cases--pursuing the death penalty where it is not warranted by the facts--as among the most pernicious aspects of Philadelphia's death penalty process.
[9] Philadelphia's new standards for appointment of counsel permit the court to name a second counsel to assist, consistent with the ABA standards that require the appointment of two attorneys in all capital cases.

The glamorous East Coast heiress whose story was to rekindle Katharine Hepburn's career and, in 'High Society', provide Grace Kelly with her most famous role, died earlier this year, aged 90.
Hepburn liked the idea for The Philadelphia Story, and after she had been rejected for the role of Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With The Wind (the part for an actress in 1938) she threw herself into assisting both the writing and production.
In fact, although she came from a prominent and wealthy family in Philadelphia, Grace Kelly was not part of the city's exclusive society.

The smarties are going to relish 'Philadelphia Story' a lot more than the two-bit trade; they're going to get a boot out of catching on to such subtleties as photog Ruth Hussey's crack to reporter Jimmy Stewart after he's been neatly put in his place by Cary Grant: 'Here's a handkerchief.
Truthfully, the psychology of the story is a specious as a spiel, and, for all the talk about the little lady being "a sort of high priestess to a virgin goddess," etc., she is and remains at the end of what most folks would call a plain snob.

One of the major themes of The Philadelphia Story is that of men’s idolization of women, and the problems it causes both parties.
It is a tribute to The Philadelphia Story that it succeeds in constructing a sparkling comedy of manners around this beleaguered foursome.

A consistently bright, bubbly, witty delight, The Philadelphia Story could just as well have been titled "The Revenge of Katharine Hepburn." Having been written off as "box-office poison" in 1938, Hepburn returned to Broadway in a vehicle tailor-made for her talents by playwright Philip Barry.
That property, of course, was The Philadelphia Story; and when MGM bought the rights to this sure-fire box-office success, it had to take Hepburn along with the package -- and also her veto as to who her producer, director, and co-stars would be.
The Philadelphia Story was remade in 1956 with a Cole Porter musical score as High Society.

Though the story still retains several basic screwball elements from the 1930s—high society setting, daffy family dynamics, personality masquerades, and romantic mix-ups galore—it gains a contemporary edge by putting its heroine under a microscope, and seamlessly weaving biting social criticism into the fabric of its nutty plot.
At its core, The Philadelphia Story is a journey of self-discovery for the headstrong Tracy, whom we first meet in a funny, instantly recognizable prologue that depicts the bitter final moments of her first marriage to millionaire playboy C.K. Dexter Haven (Cary Grant).
