Charteris, is this the New Humour?" queries one of the characters in The Philanderer.
The scene with which The Philanderer opens, the atmosphere in which it proceeds, and the marriage with which it ends, are, for the intellectually and artistically conscious classes in modern society, typical; and it will hardly be denied, I think, that they are unpleasant.

An optimal female will never end up in a situation where the best alternative is to reproduce with a detected philanderer, because if that is the case she should have started to reproduce in a previous time step.
Generally speaking, when the proportion of philanderers increases, it pays the female to be coyer, and when the probability of detecting a philandering male increases the female can afford to be less coy.
Thirdly, it is worse to reproduce with a philanderer than not to reproduce at all, something that is not necessarily true.

The Philanderer is an 1898 play by G.
It is one of the three plays Shaw published as Plays Unpleasant in 1898, because its purpose is not to entertain its audience - as the traditional Victorian theatre was supposed to - but instead to raise awareness of social problems and serve as a criticism of capitalist behaviour.

Besides, as underdeveloped as its plot and characters are (it was only Shaw's second play), it bristles with comic situations and bracing doses of Shavian wit.
"Philanderer" opens with a scene right out of Shaw's own life: Charteris (Fisher) is caught in the arms of his new lover Grace (Kathy Rentschler) by his longtime occasional lover Julia (Libby O'Connell), who has marital designs upon him.
The plot centers on Charteris' efforts to escape Julia, even if it means marrying Grace, and on how their actions fit their liberated ideas as members of the Ibsen Club, epitomized by Julia's resolutely manly sister (a tough Ann Lawler).
