Planet of the Apes is a 1968 science fiction film in which an astronaut finds himself 2,000+ years in the future stranded on what he believes to be another planet, in which humans are enslaved by apes.
The apes are divided: the warriors are gorilla-like, the politicians orangutan-like and the scientists chimpanzee-like.
In particular, the apes' prejudice against humans, based on religion, can be seen as an attack both on creationism (Taylor's trial bearing some resemblance to the real-life Scopes Monkey Trial) and the idea of an "evolutionary ladder" with humans at the top.

The only real success of the 2001 "Planet of the Apes" is Rick Baker's makeup, and even that's an iffy affair.
The apes' military costumes (Colleen Atwood, "Sleepy Hollow") as well as their field tents are reminiscent of Eiko Ishioka's work on Coppola's "Dracula." That oriental flavor is also found in Danny Elfman's tribal, percussive score.
"Planet of the Apes" was the last blockbuster hope for the summer of 2001, a dismal movie season that's going to the dogs.

He has cast his girlfriend, Lisa Marie, as the bitchy sexpot young wife of the town's leading citizen, and one of the most memorable shots in the film is when she straddles her male and then bobs up and down in a spastic frenzy of foreplay.
Planet of the Apes has been designed and photographed (by Phillipe Rousselot) with real artistry, but in all the ways that matter it's hack work.

Classic lines from the original film are cleverly reversed (including an unbilled cameo for Charlton Heston, in ape regalia as Thade's dying father), and while this tale of interspecies warfare leads to an ironic conclusion that's not altogether satisfying, it still bears the ripe fruit of a timeless what-if idea.
The DVD release of Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes is so loaded that the second disc needs six screens to list all of the features--or maybe it's just an excuse to show off the great-looking animated menus.
The original Planet of the Apes is one of my all time favorite movies and to mess with it was just wrong in my opinion.
