John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band is John Lennon's first official solo album, released in 1970 after having issued three experimental albums with Yoko Ono and Live Peace In Toronto 1969, a live performance in Toronto credited to The Plastic Ono Band.
The "Plastic Ono Band" in the album's title refers to the conceptual band Lennon and Ono had formed in 1969 of various supporting musicians they would use on their various solo albums.
John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band was received with high critical praise upon release and its stature has continued to grow, with the influence of the album's raw honesty and angst audible in much of the "alternative/grunge" scene of the 1990's (least of all, Kurt Cobain's work).

The Plastic Ono Band is the conceptual group John Lennon and Yoko Ono formed in 1969 before the dissolution of The Beatles.
By early 1970, Lennon and Ono had begun adding their names to their releases ("Instant Karma!" coming out as "John Lennon with The Plastic Ono Band", and their two proper solo debut albums: John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band and Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band).
By 1971 the name was being used as a secondary credit, with Lennon's and Ono's names the most prominent on their solo ventures, and with occasional variances (i.e.

POB is a fine album with Lennon demonstrating a clear, independent voice as a solo artist.
The weakness at the core of POB is, ironically, one of its greatest strengths; the emotions that wreck havoc on Lennon and, ultimately, provide him with a sense(if only temporary) of salvation.

John Lennon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The press was extremely unkind to Ono, posting a series of unflattering articles about her, one even going so far as to call her "ugly." This infuriated Lennon, who rallied around his new partner and said publicly that there was no John and Yoko, but that they were one person, JohnAndYoko.
After both Lennon and Ono were injured in the summer of 1969 in a car accident in Scotland, Lennon arranged for Ono to be constantly with him in the studio (including having a full-sized bed rolled in) as he worked on The Beatles' last album, Abbey Road.
Many consider "Plastic Ono Band" to be a major influence on later hard rock and punk music.

Both Yoko Ono, who coproduced it, and Klaus Voormann, who played bass on it, say they believe John Lennon's "Plastic Ono Band" is "timeless." Indeed, it sounds as if it could have been released yesterday.
"Plastic Ono Band" is dedicated to Yoko, who is also obliquely cited as the album's inspiration in the credits: "Yoko Ono: Wind." Most of the songs on the record were written while John and Yoko were undergoing prima-scream therapy with Dr. Arthur Janov in California in 1970.
"Plastic Ono Band" is, she says, "just as important as "Sgt. Pepper," in terms of being a milestone and in terms of the direction that John took after that.

Rolling Stone : 22) Plastic Ono Band
Also known as the "primal scream" album, referring to the painful therapy that gave rise to its songs, Plastic Ono Band was Lennon's first proper solo album and rock and roll's most self-revelatory recording.
Lennon attacks and denies idols and icons, including his own former band ("I don't believe in Beatles," he sings in "God"), to hit a pure, raw core of confession that feels like reality, however agonizing, and, in its echo-drenched, garage-rock crudity, is years ahead of punk.
Lennon sings about childhood loss in "Mother" and skirts blasphemy with "Working Class Hero": "You're still fucking peasants as far as I can see." But the unkindest cut came in his notoriously frank 1970 Rolling Stone interview.

John Lennon's 1970 official solo debut is as remarkable for its startling contrast to the Beatles as it is for the passion and force of its songwriting.
Stripped-down, gripping, and emotionally resonant, PLASTIC ONO BAND has little to do with the hook-heavy pop of his early Beatles work, or the psychedelic, word-salad approach of his songs on SGT PEPPER'S LONELY HEART'S CLUB BAND and ABBEY ROAD.
Instead, this is an album of intensely confessional songs that lay bare the personal demons Lennon was trying to exorcise at the time--the ghosts of fame, family, faith, and individual identity, among them.
